[YEP-DC] YEP-DC & the Harvard Black Alumni Society Invite You to "Re-examining affirmative action: How the Fisher case could impact higher education"

Re-examining affirmative action: How the Fisher case could impact higher education

A panel discussion co-sponsored by the Harvard Black Alumni Society & YEP-DC

WHEN: Thursday, April 25, 2013, 6:30 – 8:30pm

WHERE: University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC), 801 North Capitol St NE (near Union Station metro)

RSVP: http://bit.ly/Y181l7

DESCRIPTION: In Fisher vs. University of Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue its latest ruling on the Constitutionality of race-conscious admissions policies. Although the Court has found scope for such policies in the past, there is speculation that it may further restrict them this time. Meanwhile, demographic trends indicate people of color will soon be a majority of the population, prompting some to ask if race-conscious policies are still necessary to ensure equal opportunity and promote diversity. While it's unclear what the Court's decision will be, the Fisher case has the potential to re-shape college admissions and campus life more broadly.

In light of this, we have invited a panel of legal experts, policy analysts, admissions officers and university officials to share their perspectives on the following questions: Are affirmative action policies currently serving their intended purpose? Why or why not? What are the alternatives? How will the justices' ruling in the Fisher case impact students, administrators and institutions across the country? How will colleges and universities respond to the Court's decision? What will this case mean for access to higher education for underrepresented and/or disadvantaged groups of students?

Come join us for this important conversation. Light refreshments will be provided. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for additional details.
