Title: Induction and Mentoring of New Teachers

Presenter: Ellen Moir, CEO and founder of the New Teacher Center
Description: Ms. Moir will share her research on teacher mentoring and induction models and discuss what her work at the New Teacher Center (NTC) suggests about the essential components of an effective induction program for teachers. Ms. Moir will discuss the elements of an induction model that raises student achievement and has the potential to reduce teacher attrition. NTC is a national nonprofit committed to improving student learning through the acceleration of the effectiveness of new teachers and school leaders. The induction programs offered by NTC include one-on-one mentoring and professional development, all taking place within school environments supportive to new teachers. Participants will understand the attributes of comprehensive and effective mentoring and induction programs, based on the NTC model, that can lead to improved teacher effectiveness and teacher retention, and they will be encouraged to apply those understandings to the development of high-quality mentoring and induction programs in their districts and schools.
