Calvary Women's Services offers housing, health, employment and education programs that empower homeless women in Washington, DC to change their lives. Our programs carry out our mission to offer "a safe, caring place for tonight; support, hope and change for tomorrow."
We'd love to get you involved in empowering DC's homeless women!
Currently, Calvary is looking to fill two volunteer positions. Both of these opportunities are geared towards the professional skill-set of teachers.
First, The Job Lead Facilitator is hosted through Calvary's job placement program, Step Up DC. This program connects eligible candidates in Calvary's transitional and permanent housing programs to employers in the community. Through the program, women gain additional opportunities to support themselves by re-entering the workforce. The Step Up DC Job Lead Facilitator allows 3-4 participants to access the computers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings by logging them onto the machines, monitoring that the activities are appropriate and answering any questions that may arise in regards to best job searching practices and technology. If time allows, the Step Up DC Computer Lab Supervisor may be asked to conduct job searches that can be done in tandem to the supervision.
Second, our LEAP Facilitators are committed and enthusiastic instructors who are able to lead weekly discussions for up to 10 residents. LEAP is the Life Skills, Education and Arts Program of Calvary Women's Services. This program empowers women with the basic education and skills they need to successfully move out of homelessness. The class topics range from budgeting to geography to hoola-hooping but are all developed within a curriculum useful in the transition out of homelessness. Each volunteer will be matched with a class topic that fits their passions and a curriculum that fits the group. Classes are held on weekday afternoons for one hour sessions and continue for eight weeks.
