When we talk about inequality in education, are we really talking about poverty? Recess blogger CJ Libassi thinks so -- and he explains why it's important to distinguish the two in this week's blog post.
How do some ed reformers, for example, see promise in the American education system when less than half of adults read at a basic level? "Because a person's own experience shapes his or her intuitions about the world, such divergent experiences can produce just as divergent interpretations of the facts," CJ writes. "That is, if you got a good education, you're likely to be receptive to the idea that the education system isn't doing so bad; if you didn't, you might not." Both camps might be right, and that's the rub in the ed reform debate, he says. "When the experience of the highest on the income distribution varies so greatly from those below, it becomes difficult not only to find the political will to fix a problem, but to even see the problem in the first place."
