[YEP-DC] Senior Legislative Associate, Education

Senior Legislative Associate

The Alliance for Excellent Education seeks a senior legislative associate who, under the supervision of the vice president for federal advocacy, will be responsible for managing elements of the Alliance's legislative and advocacy efforts. S/he will work closely with the other members of the federal advocacy department and the policy department along with other Alliance staff to advance the Alliance's policy agenda in Congress, with the U.S. Department of Education, the White House and in states, working with relevant education and civil rights organizations as partners.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the vice president for federal advocacy and the director of federal advocacy to develop and manage the Alliance's federal legislative and advocacy efforts.
  • Work cross departmentally to develop and advance the Alliance's policy agenda, including the Alliance's emerging and ongoing efforts to influence state policy.
  • Work with staff in Congress, the U.S. Department of Education, the White House,  in state departments of education and/or state legislators to advance the Alliance's policy agenda.
  • Work closely with relevant education and civil rights organizations; represent the Alliance in  coalitions and work to develop coalitions around the Alliance's policy agenda.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of relevant federal policy, legislation, and regulations and emerging education issues, including analysis of the impact of such activity, and keep Alliance staff abreast of relevant issues.
  • Draft legislation/legislative specs; policy memos; summaries or fact sheets; testimony; talking points and other documents to support the Alliance's policy and advocacy agenda.
  • Plan and conduct webinars and briefings, including coordinating the participation of policy makers and partners in large-scale Alliance events.

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in federal and/or state education policy and advocacy, preferably related to secondary schools
  • At least 5 years of Capitol Hill, U.S. Department of Education, state department of education, association and/or other advocacy  experience
  • Ability to analyze education data and policy, legislation, and regulation at the federal and/or state level
  • Experience in developing education policy, including drafting legislation and/or regulation at the federal and/or state level
  • Strong knowledge of the processes involved in developing federal and/or state education policy
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work in teams
  • Bachelor's degree

Position reports to Vice President of Federal Advocacy.

The Alliance develops and advocates for research- and practice-based national and federal policies that support effective, comprehensive, and systemic secondary school reform. Specifically, the Alliance aims to assure that high standards, aligned with college- and work-readiness, are in place in all schools and that students are provided with the supports they need to attain academic success. The Alliance's efforts are based on the premise that, if given the right environment and tools, every student can achieve.
