Overview of E.L. Haynes
E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. seeks an Elementary School Principal to join a first-rate team at a school that is nationally recognized as a Center for Excellence.  The next elementary school principal will take an excellent program and make it the exemplar for the city and the nation. 
 
The school currently serves over 1,000 students from Pre-K through Grade 11, and will continue to grow to serve more than 1,100 students through Grade 12.   The diversity of our students is one of the most unique traits of the school – 51% African American, 35% Latino, 9% Caucasian, 4% Multi-race, 1% Asian, 68% free and reduced price lunch, 23% English Language Learners, and 18% special education. E.L. Haynes provides a rigorous, college-preparatory education, typically reserved for an elite few, to students from all backgrounds in our nation's capital. 
 
As a member of the Leadership Team, the Elementary School Principal will have a unique opportunity to lead the school's implementation and execution of key strategies to achieve outstanding results for all students.  S/he will be part of a dynamic, collaborative organization that has developed a culture of excellence and entrepreneurship.  In addition, s/he will impact education beyond the school's walls as part of E.L. Haynes' Broader Impact efforts. These systemic reform initiatives include shaping policy, developing human capital, convening practitioners, and launching innovation both locally and nationally. Currently, these initiatives engage teachers in more than 25 public and public charter schools in DC serving over 10,000 students funded by competitive grants from Race to the Top, the Carnegie Corporation, the Meyer Foundation, New Schools Venture Fund, other local and national organizations.

Overview of the Role
The leadership of the Elementary School is critical to the success of the mission and vision, and has the challenge of shaping the trajectory for our youngest students between the Pre-Kindergarten and 4th Grades. Grades Pre-K through 4 are critical learning years that set the groundwork for a child's eventual success through middle and high school and on to the college of their choice.  The Elementary School Principal is responsible for leading his/her team to dramatically catch up students who are below grade level and to accelerate students who are on or above grade level while offering an exciting program of core academics (i.e. reading and writing, humanities, math, and science), electives (e.g. music, art, health and fitness), world language, and competitive athletics to all our students, including those who have English language acquisition and special education needs.  The Principal will be responsible for supervising instructional staff, overseeing the development of curriculum, ensuring all student needs are met, and engaging families in the support of every student.  In order to lead the remarkable staff, s/he must have core content expertise in order to coach teachers and guide their development. 
 
The Principal will work closely with the Head of School; Chief of Operations and Policy, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Marketing and Development Officer; Directors of Student Support Services, Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Director of Literacy, Math and Literacy Curriculum and Staff Developers, Directors of Response to Intervention, Technology Innovation, Student Performance and Assessment; the middle and high school principals, and elementary school assistant principals to provide consistent, effective school leadership. 
 
The following is a general list of responsibilities of the position; additional duties may be assigned.
 
Teaching and Learning
  • Oversees and supports the effective, consistent teaching practices described in the E.L. Haynes Teacher Competency Rubric.
  • Supports individual teachers in improving instructional practice and reaching personal goals.
  • Leads the execution of the school's Instructional Strategic Plan.
  • Plans and facilitates biweekly Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) meetings.
  • Supervises the Assistant Principals and Restorative Justice Coordinator.
  • Works with the Program Directors to organize and analyze data.
  • Supports teachers in administering assessments and collecting data.
  • Diagnoses and monitors student learning, instruction, and the curriculum with data.
  • Provides teachers with analysis of data and identified needs.
  • Collects assessment data identified in the school's accountability plan.
  • Communicates with parents about the curriculum/instructional program at E.L. Haynes. 
  • Supports the implementation of a comprehensive arts, language, and health/fitness program. 
School Culture
  • Communicates the school's vision and builds teams to support the mission, vision and values.
  • Motivates adults to demonstrate their belief that all students can learn at high levels and to accept responsibility for meeting student achievement goals.
  • Leads the development and revision of the school's social curriculum.
  • Monitors and supports the use of the social curriculum, including restorative justice practices.
  • Fosters student leadership, efficacy and stewardship.
  • Is accessible to students and parents.
  • Engages families and larger community in the life of the school. 
Aligned Staff
  • Develops annual strategic staffing plan aligned with Instructional Strategic Plan with CAO.
  • Works with the Human Capital Office to recruit, select and evaluate high quality staff.
  • Plans and leads weekly Professional Development aligned with school goals.
  • Plans summer training for new staff with Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Facilitates setting of campus and grade level achievement SMART goals.
  • Leads the Professional Growth Plan Cycle for the campus.
  • Meets with teachers about individual professional development goals.
  • Seeks professional development opportunities for individuals and entire staff to support goals in concert with the Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Arranges school visits and supports peer observation and critique.
  • Leads a high functioning Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
  • Prepares weekly staff notes to provide on-going communication with teachers and campus staff.
  • Edits/Revises staff handbook as needed. 
Systems and Operations
  • Works with the Operations Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of the campus.
  • Develops school calendar with other principals and Chief Academic Officer.
  • Develops the bell schedule for all grade levels and subject areas with Chief Academic Officer.
  • Develops inclusion and English language learning schedule with Director of Student Support Services, campus Assistant Director of Student Support Services, and Director of English Language Learning.
  • Attends Board meetings and Board's School Performance Committee Meetings, as needed.
  • Works with principals and Chief Financial Officer to draft budget.
  • Manages elementary school budget. 
Personal Leadership

  • Demonstrates self-awareness and commitment to ongoing learning.
  • Uses effective interpersonal skills to build trust.

 The Ideal Candidate will possess: 
  • A belief that all children, from every background, must receive an excellent, college-preparatory education, and are able to reach high levels of academic achievement.
  • Fully embraces serving students with English language learning and special needs.
  • A track record of success as the Principal of a high-performing school and/or as a Principal that has led dramatic increases in student achievement.
  • Content expertise in a core subject area (Math, Reading & Writing, Science) required.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, lead, and collaborate with adults from a diverse range of perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and keep strong relationships with diverse students and families.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivation, especially when juggling competing priorities.
  • Ability to think strategically, translate thoughts to action, and follow-through with all details.
  • Humility, a sense of humor, and flexibility in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
