College and Career Readiness Coordinator at Maya Angelou Schools and the See Forever Foundation
 
The See Forever Foundation's College and Career Readiness Coordinator supports the Post-Secondary Success (PSS) team. The college and career readiness coordinator's role is to assist students 1) in developing a sense of awareness and self-worth, 2) in the acquisition of personal exploration, decision making and goal setting skills needed to facilitate their educational development, 3) to help students acquire the skills needed for college and life after college, and 4) to encourage students to enhance their abilities in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking to enable them to achieve their goals more quickly.  The college and career readiness coordinator must also become an advocate for students who may not be "college material" and provide understanding of alternative post-secondary routes.
 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the director of post-secondary success, the college and career readiness coordinator will complete the following duties

Prepare students for success in college and career through goal development, assessment and internship support

  • Coordinate individual and small group counseling sessions to assist students with creating and implementing post-secondary educational and employment goals and action plans consistent with students' personal goals and needs
  • Assist with the effective implementation of the college and career readiness curriculum and learning activities to guide students through post-secondary processes and procedures
  • Work with the special education team to understand and serve students with special needs
  • Understand and employ NOSCA's Eight Components of College and Career Readiness Counseling
  • Organize post-secondary planning and transition for seniors by coordinating senior meetings, supporting the college and scholarship application processes and identifying employment pathways
  • Establish career center of updated career opportunities and work readiness materials
  • Provide academic advising, job coaching, and internship support to juniors and seniors
  • Organize monthly work readiness workshops across campuses for students, parents and alumni
  • Coordinate the exposure program to include exposure opportunities, career readiness programs, and other regional enrichment opportunities
  • Support and facilitate registration and enrollment in The District of Columbia's Mayors Summer Youth Employment Program
  • Manage and evaluate work performance for high school interns through internship site visits and weekly check-ins with internship supervisors by phone and email
  • Monitor and record internship hours
  • Prepare weekly student progress reports and/or internship evaluations and department updates for submission to Assistant Principal, counselors, and grade academy leaders
  • Prepare and verify monthly payroll for the internship program

Build and maintain network of community representatives and contacts

  • Facilitate effective collaboration with both community- and school-based college access partners for post-secondary educational and employment planning and support
  • Attend local and out of state conferences in regards to workforce development to discuss retention data collection, achievement among low-income students, and successes and failures of state to state programs
  • Establish partnerships with public, private and non-profit business sectors within the metropolitan area to develop internship placements for all 11th and 12th grade students
  • Develop and maintain resource database of prospective employers and local community agencies

Other Duties

  • Coordinate with the alumni department to continue to provide career support to graduates of MAPCS, to include, resume writing, job searching, interview techniques, and completing employment applications
  • Participate in panel interviews for positions such as "Alumni Program Coordinator" and "Director of Post-Secondary Success"
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Ideal candidates should have:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher; social services, education, or a related field preferred
  • Experience motivating low-income and urban youth populations to succeed in post-secondary environments
  • Experience guiding others towards paths that fit their strengths and attributes
  • Excellent communication and mediation skills
  • Ability to use software and various research methods to help in decision making for college choices and career planning
  • Ability to organize and maintain confidential records
  • Ability to serve as a member of the professional learning community to promote an educational climate in which students can grow intellectually and emotionally
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, and highly adaptable environment

 

In addition, candidates should possess an unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic and workforce skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed in the workplace, post-secondary education, and beyond.
