EDUCATION ADVISOR
Role:
Policy Advisors at Civic Enterprises perform a variety of roles to ensure the successful completion of projects in our portfolio. The Education Advisor oversees the education portfolio at Civic Enterprises, and coordinates actions needed to take a project in the education space from start to finish, including:
Research and Writing
• Co-author major reports with the CEO; write briefs, concept papers; develop PowerPoint presentations and other content related to cutting edge-education issues for key internal and external audiences;
• Conduct original and synthesized research, project or survey design in partnership with major thinkers in the field;
• Identify field-wide best practices, and translate those into case studies; conduct interviews with policy experts and leaders in the relevant fields;
• Track education-related issues in the media, legislative activity and research; help respond to media requests as needed;
• Support the design and publicity process of reports, media or events with other members of the team (including drafting and reviewing op-eds, press releases, and other communications materials); and
• Work closely with other Analysts/Advisors to discern next steps for projects to ensure that our work has a measurable impact in communities. Partner Engagement
• Scope projects; participate in initial strategy sessions with CE CEO, COS and client to determine define projects, lines of inquiry and outcomes;
• Support the planning and participation in meetings, conference calls, symposiums, etc. with high-level education stakeholders (foundations, government agencies, nonprofits)
• Draft project timelines and ensure timely completion of benchmarks;
• Serve as the project lead with education partners; interact with our clients to ensure the work meets their needs and managing new and existing relationships with stakeholders in the field of education; serve as a spokesperson for the organization (at major events, panels, etc.); support the CEO on education engagements; and
• Network with key policy and institution stakeholders on behalf of Civic Enterprises. The position will also include other duties as assigned. The Education Advisor reports to the Chief of Staff (COS) and assists the COS on matters of importance to the long-term operation of the company, including ensuring that proposals are written and submitted on time and assisting in the hiring of policy analysts, fellows, and interns as appropriate. The Education Advisor is supported by a Research Associate and a team of fellows, and also works with the Office & Financial Assistant to ensure all contracts are fully executed and invoicing coincides with deliverables of projects.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred (concentration in policy, public administration, education or other relevant discipline preferred); 5-7 years experience required.
• Strong working knowledge of education-related issues.
• Very strong research and writing ability. Business and report writing skills are preferred; familiarity with government and nonprofit enterprises is a plus.
• Strong qualitative and analytic skills. Keen attention to detail and data accuracy.
• Strong interpersonal skills-- ability to interact with high-level individuals across a range of organizations.
• Customer-orientation and sound judgment; ability to consistently demonstrate a professional manner in dealing with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally to the organization.
• Hard-working and good-spirited under pressure and under tight deadlines, juggling multiple competing tasks and prioritizing demands.
• Comfortable with ambiguity, team player and flexible as tasks and priorities shift.
• Strong motivation to learn and contribute to the organization's mission.
• Ability to self start and troubleshoot without supervision; ability to work independently and in teams in a small office environment.

OFFICE AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANT
Role:
The Office & Financial Assistant at Civic Enterprises performs a variety of roles to manage daily operations and administrative functions that ensure long-term viability of the company. Chief among them overseeing all financial activity and serving as executive assistant to the CEO. Duties include:
Office and Organizational Support
• Scheduling all meetings, calls, events, speeches and travel for the CEO, including making speech preparations and organizing event briefing packets; supporting analysts/advisors on the same;
• Ensuring smooth daily flow of meetings and events, including briefing the CEO, chief of staff, and advisors/analysts on competing demands or scheduling conflicts; making meeting preparations and preparing materials;
• Conducting occasional project research, media relations, or writing assignments to support the same;
• Overseeing and assisting in all daily operations, including building management, IT support (printers, scanning, emails, internet, etc.), and other resources to support the office (phone, office supplies, etc.)
• Working closely with the CEO, Chief of Staff, and analysts/advisors to ensure the CE team is supported, and coordinating company activities
Financial Functions
• Preparing and organizing contracts with clients and assisting in managing partner relationships, including communications with senior leaders
• Organizing and managing systems, procedures and policies for in-house accounting functions while ensuring their timeliness, accuracy and completeness
• Invoicing clients and coordinating billing with content of projects and deliverables with CEO, Chief of Staff, and analysts/advisors to support them in managing those relationships, and supporting the invoicing and accounts for other Principals and consultants.
• Managing accounts payable and accounts receivable
• Preparing reports, analysis and other financial data as required
• Assisting in the management of employee benefits with outside contractors
• Working closely with CE's accountant to ensure all reporting and payroll requirements are met
• Managing month-end and year-end closings
Communications
• Updating the website with new content
• Coordinating the design, printing and publicity process of various reports with other members of the team
• Managing CE contacts
• Writing media press releases and overseeing social media outreach The Office & Financial Assistant performs these tasks on a regular basis but his/ her role varies daily depending on the needs of the company and its employees, so this includes other duties as assigned. On behalf of the CEO and staff, s/he regularly interacts with clients, discerning the appropriate tone in correspondence, and anticipates the CEO's and staff needs.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree (concentration in business, finance, communications or other relevant discipline preferred); full-time or internship experience working on issues related to CE's work is desirable but not required
• Customer-orientation and sound judgment; ability to consistently demonstrate a professional manner in dealing with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally to the organization
• Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills
• Interest and experience (volunteer or paid) in the public policy, social entrepreneurship, finance or the nonprofit sector; eagerness to grow as a professional in the sector
• Basic understanding of accounting principles and bookkeeping
• Excellent organizational and anticipatory skills; keen attention to detail
• Ability to interact with high-level individuals across a range of organizations
• Proficiency in the use of technology with emphasis on Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access) and database applications; other internet-based applications for managing information; knows or willing to learn tools to perform basic updates to CE website
• Knowledgeable and skilled with regard to the latest social media trends and analytics
• Ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines, juggling multiple competing tasks and prioritizing demands
• Strong motivation to learn and contribute and an ability to self start, troubleshoot, and problem solve without supervision; ability to work independently and support a team; a relentless "can do" attitude
