The Youth Voice: What Youths Say About How They Benefit

Please join colleagues and U.S. Department of Education employees for a presentation and discussion about the Department's programs and initiatives, and their benefits for students and families.

The discussion will be moderated by Massie Ritsch, acting assistant secretary for communications and outreach, and will bring together young people who have been impacted by ED's policies and programs (specifically, Individuals with Disability Education Act , School Improvement Grant , Title I, Pell grant program and Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs commonly referred to as GEAR UP. Our guests will include high school students, recent college graduates, and a special education teacher.
You'll hear directly from young people about ED's support for youths, including how ED helped them prepare for, gain access to and afford college; supplementary Title I resources; support for teachers and instruction to close achievement gaps; ED's School Improvement Grants to help states and districts turn around low-performing schools; and support and assistance for students with disabilities under IDEA.
For the past two years, ED's Youth Engagement Initiative has reached out to young people to better understand their needs and obstacles to their success, and to use that information to improve ED's programs so they are more responsive to the needs of young people.

The LBJ Building is located at 400 Maryland Ave. SW, across from the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum, between 4th and 6th Sts. SW, and between C St. and Independence Ave. SW. You should enter via the entrance on C St., east end (closest to 4th St.). There is metered parking near the building and parking garages, and the nearest Metro station is L'Enfant Plaza (exit at 7th St. and Maryland Ave.).
