The California Department of Education (CDE) is currently recruiting for the Director of the Career and College Transition Division. CDE Division Directors are an integral part of the CDE's leadership team. The Director, under the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI), the Chief Deputy Superintendent, and the Deputy Superintendent for Instruction and Learning Support Branch is responsible for leading the implementation of State Superintendent of Public Instruction's priorities and initiatives to ensure all of California's students are career and college ready upon completion of high school. This includes developing and implementing strategies and programs for transforming the high school educational experience; implementing multiple pathway and linked learning approaches; fostering new models of high schooling including thematic, early college, pathway, charter, and online high schools; expanding and promoting Partnership Academies; fostering personalized learning approaches; and, promoting twenty-first century skills. Central to the position is the ability to lead Career Technical Education Programs and policy. The Director oversees all activities and relationships with postsecondary education, and provides leadership and oversight of programs that prepare students for transition to college or advanced training. In addition, the director interacts and communicates with a diverse group of stakeholders, including high school-aged youth, out-of-school youth, parents, local education agencies (LEAs), schools, higher education agencies, state agencies, professional associations, Congress, State Legislature, and business and labor representatives.
The Director provides leadership and supervision to staff in the five offices that comprise the Career and College Transition Division including the Agriculture and Home Economic Education Unit, the Career Technical Education Leadership and Instructional Support Unit, the High School Innovations and Initiatives Office, the College Preparation and Postsecondary Programs Office, and the Career Technical Education Administration and Management Office and is responsible for secondary education, career technical education, and postsecondary preparation programs and policy. The Director is responsible for recommending and establishing program goals and objectives; ensuring that program planning and development efforts are consistent with approved departmental objectives; overseeing budget preparation and expenditures; allocating program grants; and providing technical assistance to LEAs.
