[YEP-DC] Operations Manager Opening with DC Scholars!

Operations Manager 

Background

Scholar Academies is a non-profit school management organization that exists to close the achievement gap for low-income students. Scholar Academies improves educational equity by:

  • Operating schools that prepare every student for the path to college and for entry into the workforce
  • Acting as a thought partner with organizations to advance our educational systems to positively impact every student
  • Challenging the status quo and embracing innovation as a way to improve outcomes for every student

Currently, Scholar Academies operates five schools across Philadelphia, Trenton and DC. Young Scholars Charter School (grades 6-8) in Philadelphia is the highest-performing charter middle school in Philadelphia serving 250 students. Young Scholars Frederick Douglass CS (grades K-8) in Philadelphia, and DC Scholars Stanton (PS-5) in Washington DC are now in their third year of turnaround.

In August 2012, Scholar Academies added two new schools to the network. DC Scholars Public Charter School will initially serve students in Pre School through 3^^rd^^ grade before eventually growing to serve students up to 8^^th^^ grade. In Trenton, NJ Scholar Academies began managing Paul Robeson Charter School, a Trenton Public School District turnaround school serving neighborhood students in grades 4-8. The Scholar Academies' network's schools serve a combined 1,900 students across our three regions.

In five years, Scholar Academies plans to operate twelve schools serving more than 6,000 students in two to three regions, continuing on its aggressive growth trajectory to be one of the highest achieving school networks in the nation.

Washington DC – Manager of Operations

The Manager of Operations will work directly with the Senior Manager of Operations and the Chief Operating Officer to support the school-based Operations teams. As an operations leader within the Scholar Academies network, he/she will play an active role in designing and executing centrally led initiatives to implement systems and practices that enhance the organization's efficiency and scalability.

The ideal candidate for this role is highly organized and understands the importance of rolling up their sleeves to get the work done. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving skills and be able to see issues both from a mirco- and a macro-perspective. The candidate will view challenges as opportunities and can "roll with the punches" when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

The Operations Manager responsibilities will include the following areas of work:

  • Student Data Management
    • Provides oversight and support to the school-based operations teams around effective data management, ensures that strong practices are in place for the collection and accurate recording of all student data
  • Compliance & Authorizer Relations
    • Ensures that schools are in compliance with all local, state, federal requirements and coordinates authorizer visits and communication
    • Manages the submission of all state and local reports
  • Operations Management
    • Actively manages school operations teams and serves as an on-call resource, thought-partner, problem solver and coach
    • Ensure the implementation the Scholar Academies model
  • Human Resources
    • Responsible for ensuring all new employee are enrolled into payroll and benefits and maintain HR records
    • Support teachers through the certification process to meet state highly qualified and certification requirements
  • Facilities
    • Works with school operations teams to ensure building is clean, safe, and follows the Scholar Academies model

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated management or supervisory experience, preferred
  • At least two years of work experience, preferably in a high-performing urban school environment
  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree in education or a related field preferred
  • Desire to be a part of a performance-driven team
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Relentless drive towards results
  • Adaptability and the demonstrated ability to perform at a high level during particularly challenging periods
  • Proven ability to design, implement and school-wide systems
  • Exceptional organization, project management and data analysis skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build superior relationships with people at all levels and background
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Successful experience working in a diverse organization or community
  • Passion for education reform and a commitment to closing the achievement gap between racial, ethnic and economic groups
