INSTRUCTORS NEEDED FOR CIVICS PROGRAM
The American Civics Center is seeking civics instructors for its Washington, DC-based educational travel programs. The American Civics Center is a non-partisan civic education organization dedicated to providing quality, affordable, and accessible programs that encourage participants to learn about history, government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy.
Instructors work with a group of 22 secondary school students from communities across the United States and around the world as the students explore Washington's public policy institutions, media organizations, monuments, and museums. In addition, instructors conduct workshop sessions each morning in headquarter hotels (Metro accessible) located in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington and facilitate seminars held at locations throughout DC. On two evenings each week, instructors accompany students to social activities at theater venues like the Kennedy Center, meal locations like Hard Rock Café and shopping areas like Georgetown and Pentagon City. Most travel around DC is by private motor coach.
Instructors receive stipends in the following amounts:
- $85 per training day (5-10 hours)
- $170 per program day (9-12 hours)
- Most meals are provided or reimbursed during assigned program day.
INSTRUCTOR POSITION AND SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
1. BS/BA in political science, international relations, history, economics, government, education, or related field
2. Strong knowledge of American history, U.S. government and current events
3. Good knowledge of Washington DC's National Mall Area
4. Ability to work with students from 12 to 18 years of age
5. Ability to set aside personal viewpoint on an issue to present information in a nonpartisan manner
6. Ability to satisfactorily complete 30 hours of training conducted over 4 days:
Tue. 01/15/2013 from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm (Crystal City)
Weds. 01/16/2013 from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm (Crystal City)
Thurs. 01/17/2013 from 10:30 am until 8:30 pm (Crystal City)
Mon. 01/28/2013 from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm (Downtown DC)
7. Ability to work the following three date periods:
Fri. 01/18/2013 thru Mon. 01/21/2013
Sun. 02/10/2013 thru Fri. 02/15/2013
Sun. 03/17/2013 thru Fri. 03/22/2013
8. Ability to work at least three of six following additional date periods:
Sun. 02/03/2013 thru Wed. 02/06/2013
Thu. 03/07/2013 thru Fri. 03/08/2013
Sun. 03/10/2013 thru Wed. 03/13/2013
Sun. 03/24/2013 thru Wed. 03/27/2013
Sun. 03/31/2013 thru Wed. 04/03/2013
Sun. 04/07/2013 thru Wed. 04/10/2013
9. Additional dates available in May, June and July for those interested.
10. Spanish language skills preferred but not required.
