Media Relations and Events Manager
Posted: November 8, 2012
Are you an ace communicator, an education-reform fanatic, a super writer/editor, a tireless worker, a terrific team player, and eager to take a key position in downtown D.C. with one of the country's foremost education-reform think tanks and advocacy organizations? If so, you might have a future as the Thomas B. Fordham Institute's Media Relations and Events Manager.
The Position
Fordham is a high-performing organization with a long track record of innovation and excellence within the domains of media relations and social media. To take our communications activities to the next level, we are seeking a dynamic, mission-driven, experienced media relations professional with savvy and know-how in traditional media, social media, and education reform.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, the Media Relations and Events Manager will work collaboratively with other members of Fordham's communications team and its senior leadership to develop and implement communication strategies and events programming to broaden Fordham's impact and promote our school reform principles, research, analysis, and ideas.
Because Fordham works on the national, state, and on the ground in Ohio, the Media Relations and Events Manager will be able to make considerable impact in the national debate on education reform and also see concrete results.
Responsibilities
- Lead Fordham's relationships with the press, including print reporters, bloggers, television and radio producers, and others
- Respond to media inquiries by providing relevant and timely information on Fordham and our products, conducting research, and arranging interviews
- In collaboration with the New Media Manager, develop and execute media campaigns for Fordham's products (research studies and books mostly)
- Develop and promote 10-12 "Fordham LIVE!" public events per year, which pivot around Fordham's current research and hot topics in education reform
- Develop metrics to track Fordham's impact in media and policy influence. Report results regularly to senior leadership and the board of trustees
Qualifications
The successful candidate must share the core values of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and be enthusiastic about our mission. The successful candidate will have had ample experience as a journalist and/or a public affairs professional (3-5 years at least), as well as knowledge and experience in the education reform world. Additional requirements are:
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- A deep understanding of education policy and the key players, arguments, and ideas in education reform
- Significant communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations
- A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment
- The ability to conceptualize and communicate, in a concrete way
- A solid understanding of the ever-evolving media environment (including current trends in social media)
- The ability to work in a fast paced, hard driving environment
- Strong organizational skills
About Fordham
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute is one of the nation's premier education-policy think tanks. Our effectiveness stems from our core school-reform values, our credible research, and our considerable facility at agenda-setting, analyzing, explaining, commenting, and criticizing. Our modest endowment gives us a valuable measure of independence.
While Fordham is a relatively small organization, it's a surprisingly complex one. This dynamic enables staff the opportunity to wear many hats and provides amble opportunity for professional growth and development. We do well-respected research on important issues of the day, both at the national level and in Ohio. In Ohio, we also serve as a statewide education reform advocacy organization, with substantial impact on K-12 policy across multiple topics. In Dayton and beyond, including an increasing number of other Ohio cities, we're "on the ground" as an authorizer of charter schools and engaged in myriad other activities that bring us into direct contact with real kids, educators, community needs—and the challenges that come with all of these.
This combination of local, statewide, and national perspectives, with each informing and facilitating the other two in multiple ways, makes us unique on the American education scene.
