[YEP-DC] Volunteer opportunity -- Chavez Schools, Washington, DC

Call for volunteers! Spend a few hours giving back and helping shape students' civic attitudes this December 20th and 21st.

In three weeks the entire senior class of the Cesar Chavez high schools will culminate their study of U.S. government with an in-school We the People competition. To demonstrate their deep knowledge of the Constitution, its history, and its implications, students will participate in simulated congressional hearings where they work in teams of 3-4 to "testify" before a panel of "congressmen" (aka judges) about an assigned topic. (More info here: http://new.civiced.org/wtp-the-program/hearings/high-school).

This is where you come in. We are in need of volunteers to serve on judges panels. Judges will work in groups of 2-3 to listen to students' ideas, ask them questions, and grade them on a rubric. The time commitment is about 2 hours and no specific knowledge is required (there will be a short judges training to help you out!). Here are the details:

Parkside High School We the People Competition (3701 Hayes St. NE -- Minnesota Ave Metro stop)
Thursday, December 20th
8:30 am to 11:00 am

Capitol Hill We the People Competition (709 12th St SE -- Eastern Market Metro stop)
Friday, December 21st
8:30 am to 11:00 am

This is a great way to see one of the school's most demanding performance tasks in action and to connect with our public policy mission! If you are available and can serve as a judge, please let me know as soon as possible. Also, please let me know which campus you'd like to judge, or if you'd like to judge both. You can reply to robyn.nolan@chavezschools.org.

Thanks for considering this valuable opportunity for our scholars! I hope to see you there!
