Faculty Appointment – Call for Applications
The Center for Urban Education at the University of the District of Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2012. The candidate's fields of specialization should include one or more of the following: special education and exceptionalities; second language acquisition; early childhood education; middle grades/adolescent education; literacy education; mathematics education; curriculum and instruction; urban education. Position Status: full-time, permanent tenure track
Pay Plan, Series & Grade: Commensurate with rank and experience
Salary Range: $59,000 - $63,393

Number of Positions: Two (2)
Location: Van Ness Campus, Washington, DC
Brief Description of Duties
· Teach graduate level courses to pre-service teachers
· Supervise pre-service teachers in field of expertise
· Work proactively and collaboratively with district, school, and teacher partners
· Participate in recruitment activities associated with program development
· Participate in program governance and other university and program-related service
· Maintain a strong research agenda appropriate for teacher education, and seek external funding
Required Qualifications:
· An earned doctorate in curriculum and instruction, teacher education, or closely related field, with strong content background in a content-area discipline. (Outstanding ABD candidates may receive consideration if degree will be completed by start date of 8/15/2012.)
· Demonstrated successful teaching experience in an urban public P-12 school in the United States; four or more years classroom experience preferred
· Professional accomplishments, dispositions, and aspirations in line with UDC's mission as an urban, land-grant university and HBCU, and the Center's mission to ensure that urban learners achieve their academic and social-emotional potential
Preferred Qualifications
· Undergraduate or other non-terminal degree in content discipline related to area of teacher education expertise (e.g. a bachelor's or master's degree in mathematics is preferred for mathematics teacher educators)
· Teaching and research background and interests in more than one discipline or areas of teacher preparation
· Demonstrated ability to significantly advance equity and student achievement in diverse, high-needs educational contexts
· University teaching experience in a teacher education program with a field-based component
· Experience or strong interest in working in a new program with high potential for growth
· Demonstrated ability to use constructivist methods and engaged, active pedagogy to build concepts and skills with teacher candidates
· Familiarity with Washington, DC's local school landscape or experience in similar urban school systems
· Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in high-needs/hard-to-staff areas such as mathematics education or special education
