GreatSchools DC Program Director—Washington, DC (Full-time)

GreatSchools, the nation's premier provider of online K-12 information, is in its third year of an ambitious program to improve educational outcomes for DC children by inspiring and guiding parents to be involved. This project, a part of the GreatSchools Local initiative, drives innovation and proves results within the GreatSchools organization by partnering with a wide range of local DC organizations. Our goal is to demonstrate positive outcomes on children's learning by providing parents with technology-based tools that help them choose the right school for their children and support their children's educational success.
The GreatSchools DC Program Director will work to drive initiatives within GS and within the DC community that provide high value to families. Most work will be conducted from Washington, DC; however, occasional travel to the GreatSchools San Francisco headquarters office and other locales will be necessary.
This is not your typical 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, stay at your desk kind of job. This job is perfect for a visionary, tech-savvy master of partnerships who thrives in a politically-charged environment and can blend technology solutions with outreach efforts to revolutionize parent engagement. Sometimes work will be required in the evenings or on weekends. You will be out in the community one day and at your desk the next; each day brings something different.
This position reports to the Director of Local Programs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Program Direction and Communication: (35%)
- Develop and direct a strategic plan for expanding and diversifying GreatSchools Local projects in Washington, DC and potentially the greater DC area
- Envision and champion new product and service ideas that will serve parents in DC and beyond
- Generate and implement responses to GS product research and development needs as they arise
- Support development and iteration of mobile-friendly web-based services to support school choice and parent engagement in children's education in DC and beyond
- Direct and manage day-to-day activities to promote and sustain GS DC projects, such as:
- Ensure that information is collected and current for all DC schools for online and print use—build and maintain relationships with all individual schools and school entities (e.g. DC Public Schools, OSSE, etc.)
- Maintain a database of all partnerships, users and materials distributed
- Create and implement a strategy to secure parent reviews of local schools quality and climate
- Coordinate with GS finance and development staff to create and maintain a local budget that drives innovation and incorporates new initiatives as they arise
- Hire and manage DC Local staff
- Monitor project progress and provide reports to funders and GreatSchools national staff
Partnership Development: (30%)
- Cultivate and maintain new and current community partner relationships, including schools, government agencies, education support agencies, etc. necessary to acquire information for school guides, conduct parent trainings and evolve the program offering to increase impact
- Incorporate information and initiatives launched by other local partners into GS tools and processes as appropriate (Don't recreate the wheel!)
- Seek local partnerships that may allow GS to develop new tools with the potential to scale to other locales
- Participate in education policy meetings, conferences and community events that affect partnership and product development
Fundraising: (20%)
- Work with GS development staff to raise funds for Local programs, with an emphasis on DC
- Develop and implement a GS DC fundraising plan, in collaboration with other SF staff and consultants
- Cultivate and develop local and regional funding sources
- Learn and use SmartSheet to track fundraising efforts
- Provide data and documents necessary for proposals, letters of inquiry, donor letters, etc.
Metrics & Assessment: (15%)
- Set appropriate DC goals, objectives and benchmarks that align with national and Local goals
- Assist DC team to set personal goals and metrics that align with DC Local goals and metrics
- Implement the GS DC program survey and other research efforts with parents as needed
- Support national and local feedback efforts with education partners, parents and/or students for GS National as needed
Job Requirements and Related Experience:
The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated experience in maintaining a network of partnerships and community mobilization and training. Experience in education-related initiatives is also necessary. He or she will also have strong communication and writing skills, and have a working knowledge of Microsoft office, including Excel.
The ideal candidate:
- Has a Bachelor's Degree
- Has 3-5 years' experience in directing complicated projects
- Has experience and aptitude driving technology and program design innovation
- Thinks creatively and with vision and agility to respond to an ever-changing climate, while being grounded in reality
- Forms and maintains healthy, mutually-beneficial relationships with competing interests in a politically charged environment
- Has the ability to build trusting relationships with DC public, private, and charter K-12 schools and the entities that work with them, such as OSSE, the DCPCSB, etc.
- Leverages human resources and manages work well from local and national staff, volunteers and community partners
- Communicates effectively and proactively in person and virtually, using a variety of styles, mediums and technologies and across a wide range of partners and parents with different levels of skill and knowledge
- Holds an attitude of customer service toward ALL internal and external stakeholders with consistent practices to back up that attitude
- Prioritizes efficiently and makes quick, consistent decisions based on a hierarchy of priorities, both national and local
- Demonstrates an understanding of how parents should support and guide their children's education
- Demonstrates a commitment to educational quality across the spectrum of school types
- Is familiar with current educational events and issues and has a strong knowledge of various Washington, DC communities, including but not limited to the education funding, education advocacy, and Anacostia parent communities
- Is able to mobilize and work with low-income and low-literacy communities and parents
- Displays a proven commitment to education and educational development
- Is self-motivated with the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation is commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position. We offer medical, dental, vision, life and disability benefits, paid time off, bonus and retirement plans including matching contributions.
