As a member of the YEP DC list-serve, you are aware of the challenges facing our school system. What isn't as known is the percentage of low income schools without functioning libraries, with the number only to grow in FY13. Research has proven we can spot the signs of future illiteracy early. A Carnegie Foundation report determined that a poor reader at the end of 1st grade has a 90% probability being a poor reader at the end of the 4th grade, and the Anne E. Casey foundation found that children who read on grade level by the end of third grade are more successful in school, work, and in life. So why are we cutting the simplest way to provide consistent access to books when it is proven that the single best way to become a better reader is to read more books? EnjoyReading a 501c3, works with these schools, to take the place of a library and further by hosting family reading fun nights throughout the year, and employing parents as BookRoom managers. Currently, we are recruiting new members to our board of directors for the following positions: Secretary, General Board Member with experience in grant writing, Partnership Coordinator, and Co-Chair.
