Curriculum Innovation Specialist for Math and Science, Department of Public Policy

Cesar Chavez Public Charter School for Public Policy, Washington, DC

 

The Curriculum Innovation Specialist is responsible for working with leaders and teachers on transforming a network of four schools to an empowering focus on higher-order thinking, critical thinking, and concept-based frameworks that increase in complexity through each grade level and transfer learning to authentic intellectual public policy projects. The Specialist will be a member of the Department of Public Policy and report to the Director of Public Policy. The Department serves as a catalyst for a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning that empowers students to narrow the gap between the promise of America's foundational ideals and the reality of their daily lives.

 

Specific duties:

·  Support the refinement and implementation of a conceptually framed curriculum in Math and Science which teachers use to layer key disciplinary ideas with more complexity over time

·  Support the construction of higher-order and critical thinking performance assessments for Math and Science

·  Provide teachers with a roadmap for transforming their classrooms into intellectual centers through curriculum revision and introduction of advanced teaching strategies

·  Assist teachers in igniting students' intellectual curiosity by making connections between core academic principles and real-world situations

·  Design and lead professional development workshops, retreats and learning labs to deliver the vision that students of any age can affect social change through an empowering curriculum

·  Collaborate with fellow members of the Public Policy Department on securing enough host organizations for students needing Fellowship and training and supporting members of the Chavez faculty on Public Policy courses (Capstone, Community Action Project, Fellowship, Interdisciplinary projects) by securing resources, explaining lesson plans, trouble shooting with teachers

·  Bring resources to the schools (e.g. speakers, public policy materials) to help better integrate public policy into the curriculum and general life of the schools

·  Support tangible efforts to increase public policy culture in the schools (e.g. co-curricular clubs, conferences, etc.)

·  All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

· Intellectual curiosity, love of reading, constant learning, continuous improvement

· Commitment to research-based decision making

· Strong follow-through and ability to efficiently execute complex tasks

· Bachelor's degree in education, math or science

· Master's degree preferred

· At least three years in education experience required

· Teaching experience preferred

· Start Date: July 2012 (flexible)
