Overview

The Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for aspiring teachers to develop into outstanding educators prepared to serve in high-need schools in Washington, D.C.

CTRs make a commitment to teach for a minimum of three years in Washington, D.C. Residents spend the first year of this commitment—their residency year—training in a classroom with a host teacher. CTRs are initially placed at KIPP DC or E.L Haynes, two high-performing D.C. public charter schools.

Throughout this time, the program supports CTRs as they develop into skilled educators through intensive coaching, focused professional development coursework, and daily practice perfecting their skills in a real classroom. After successfully completing their residency and all associated requirements, CTR alumni remain in the classroom for at least two more years and continue to teach at E.L. Haynes, KIPP DC, or partner public charter schools across D.C.
