National Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day on April 10 is the first awareness day to recognize the specific impact of HIV and AIDS on young people. Advocates for Youth has been leading the charge for this commemorative day to draw attention to the disproportionate number of new HIV infections occurring among youth. In the United States, young people ages 13–24 accounted for an estimated 26% of all new HIV infections in 2010. We are pleased that NYHAAD is a component of the CDC's efforts to 1) prevent HIV, other STDs, and teen pregnancy and promote lifelong health among young persons, and 2) acknowledge and address the needs of young persons related to HIV/AIDS prevention.
Advocates will also be hosting a Congressional Briefing on Youth and HIV on Thursday, April 9th, from 11-12 in 122 Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill. Our presenters will include two of our NYHAAD Youth Ambassadors, and Dr. Stephanie Zaza, the Division Director of CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH). Please see the attached flyer and image below to share. To RSVP, please email Jeryl@advocatesforyouth.org.
Advocates is also hosting a NYHAAD Twitter chat (#NYHAADchat) along with Dr. Zaza, MAC AIDS Fund and AIDS.gov, among others, on Wednesday, April 8th at 4pm. Please feel free to join and/or follow the conversation!
