ACADEMIC COACH

Overall Purpose and Objective of Position:
- The academic coach is responsible for providing academic support to ACHIEVEability participants as they prepare for college level courses and while they work towards their associate's and bachelor's degrees. ACHIEVEability participants are adult learners and non-traditional students either re-starting or starting college for the first time. The academic coach is responsible for developing educational programming in response to the participants' academic needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and follow through on participant educational goal plans
- Collaborate with other members of the self-sufficiency department to ensure integration of plans, services and evaluation
- Research and develop methods for motivating participants toward academic success.
- Collect and document data using the participant database and other tools and forms
- Assist participants with the college enrollment and completion of FAFSA process.
- Help new participants prepare for college level courses by teaching College Prep in either a group or one-on-one setting depending on scheduling demands.
- Develop and facilitate workshops on various topics to help ACHIEVEability participants achieve their education goals.
- Tutor participants, if needed, in one-on-one sessions that cover GED subjects and college courses.
- Work with the Development Department to recruit and manage volunteer tutors
- Train the volunteers in ACHIEVEability's tutoring protocol (case notes, expectations) and provide the volunteers with resources on tutoring strategies and materials, as necessary.
- Network and establish relationships with local post-secondary institutions to ensure a smooth transition for our participants.
- Coordinate the publication of The Write to Be Heard: Voices of ACHIEVEability, the biannual compilation of participant writing and drawings.
- Participate in the research and completion of grant proposals and reporting.
- Other duties, as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred
- High level of interest in education
- Interest in the use of technology as one of the tools to facilitate learning basic computer skills, including Word and Excel
- Connections in the education and social service communities, or desire and ability to make those connections
- Ability to relate to adults as well as children
- Commitment to the mission of ACHIEVEability
- Ability to cope with setbacks and slow progress

At ACHIEVEability, participants are pursuing college degrees to achieve long-term, sustainable self-sufficiency for themselves and their families. Responsibilities include the following:
- Provide services to all unemployed and underemployed participants
- Network and build relationships with employers to provide direct connection links to employment
- Establish partnerships with other career-focused non –profit organizations
- Develop a jobs database with available positions, position requirements and responsibilities and contacts for placement
- Provide supportive services around job searches and career development:
- Assist with career interest and aptitude tests, vocational assessments and employment assessments
- Develop and follow through on participant employment plans
- Assist participants with their training needs (resume writing, interviewing skills, self-presentation, the job search process, employment skills, employee rights and responsibilities, understanding benefits and compensation) -- via one-on-one consultations and/or group workshops
- Organize and facilitate job readiness programming
- Motivate, plan, educate and follow up with participants regarding job retention and career advancement
- Collaborate with other members of the self-sufficiency department to ensure integration of plans, services and evaluation
- Collect and document data using the participant database and other tools and forms
- Participate in developing and enhancing the organization's employment services strategy, program and activities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – writing, speaking, presentation
- Excellent customer service skills
- Experience preferred.
- Professional appearance and behavior
- Skills in Microsoft Office, Publisher and Internet
- Ability to be respectful and interact with people from all walks of life
- Strong sense of responsibility, initiative and follow through
- Ability to successfully pass background checks (criminal – FBI and PA, child abuse, drug test, driving record, college transcripts and diploma)
- Valid driver's license
- Registered vehicle available for use at work and auto insurance
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends
- Comfortable working in West Philadelphia
