[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Development Associate at Society for Science & the Public

Society for Science & the Public (SSP) seeks an experienced full-time fundraising professional to serve as Development Associate.  S/he will work within the External Affairs department under the Director of Development and provide support of annual fundraising efforts, including initiatives to generate revenue and additional types of support including individuals, SSP alumni, corporations, foundations and other entities.

Founded in 1921, Society for Science & the Public (SSP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.  The Society's mission is to engage the public in science.  Our vision is to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement:  to inform, educate and inspire.

SSP, with approximately 70 staff members, is best known for its world class science competitions including the Intel Science Talent Search, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, and the Broadcom MASTERS.  SSP also owns media properties, including the award-winning magazine Science News and the freely available Science News for Students. 

Primary Responsibilities

Coordination and support of annual fundraising campaigns and ongoing membership and donor activities, including:

·         Assist with direct mail production including acquisition, renewals and acknowledgements.

·         Communicate with customer service team; troubleshoot issues as needed.

·         Prepare donor and member giving reports as necessary.

·         Participate in member and donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities.

Research and support for major gifts and general sponsorship efforts, including:

·         Assist with creation of prospect lists and grant deadlines calendar.

·         Enter data into Raiser's Edge fundraising database including gifts, prospect information and appeal and mailing solicitation coding.

·         Assist with research on donors, corporate and foundation prospects and develop prospect profiles.

·         Research and assemble materials for internal and external meetings; coordinate with staff to maintain and update electronic and print files (when appropriate).

Other duties as assigned in support SSP's vision and mission.

Qualifications

·         Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

·         Excellent organizational skills.

·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

·         Proficiency in Raiser's Edge database or comparable donor management software.

·         Proficiency/familiarity with Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) and HTML preferred, though not required.

·         Familiarity with prospect research tools (Wealth Engine or similar) preferred, though not required.

·         High attention to detail and demonstrated proactive and strategic approach to daily tasks.

·         Demonstrated ability to work with others as a team, to multi-task and to be a self-starter.

Education/Experience

·         1-2 years' experience in a development/fundraising or similar atmosphere.

·         Bachelor's degree required.

Other Requirements

·         Attendance at all SPP education programs, which requires at least two weeks of travel annually.
