POSITION: Director of Extended Day and Enrichment Program (Part-time)
SCHOOL: National Cathedral School for Girls, Washington, D.C.
National Cathedral School (NCS) announces a part-time position as Director of the Lower School Extended Day and Enrichment Program beginning in August 2015. This is a two-part position that involves: 1) leading students in grades 4 to 6 through daily activities and assisting with homework in the Extended Day program, and 2) securing, coordinating and managing four to six after school classes and instructors each trimester for the Enrichment Program. The Extended Day program takes place from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Enrichment program classes run weekly, one hour sessions and change each trimester. This position will also be responsible for coordinating the week-long "Cathedral Cubs" camp for the children of faculty and staff of the Cathedral Close schools. The camp will take place in mid-August during the week of faculty and staff "Back to School" meetings.
Among the duties assigned to this position for Extended Day
1. Facilitate and enhance an organized and well-run Extended Day program.
2. Assist students in a variety of curricular activities, arts and crafts, games, and homework.
3. Build positive relationships with students by interacting with them on a continuous basis.
4. Provide care and work with students to ensure their social and developmental needs are met.
5. Provide positive guidance and discipline according to school policy, and refer any problems or issues that need to be communicated to the Head of Lower School.
6. Maintain the safety of all students.
7. Record daily attendance, track monthly usage rates and communicate this information to administration and the Business Office.
8. Oversee a program assistant and manage 12th grade students who serve as substitutes for the program when one of the two staff members is absent.
9. Oversee the budget; order program supplies and daily snacks; track substitutes and approve substitute pay.
10. Meet monthly with the Head of Lower School.
Among the duties assigned to this position for the Enrichment Program
1. Research and select outside instructors and NCS staff and faculty to teach an enrichment course of eight sessions. Courses change each trimester and past courses have included film, Lego engineering, cooking, aerodynamics, and Girls on the Run.
2. Contract outside instructors and run appropriate background and insurance checks.
3. Promote the enrichment classes to students and parents to ensure enough students sign up in order to run the class. If not enough students sign up, responsible for cancelling the class and reimbursing parents.
4. Ensure all aspects of the program run smoothly from attendance, pick-up, discipline issues, following up with parents if attendance issues arise, assigning classroom spaces to instructors, renting classrooms on the NCS campus when necessary, and managing enrichment class registration.
5. Write class descriptions and announcements and send to families regarding sign-up, class options, timelines and online registration information.
6. Serve as point of contact for all program instructors as well as liaison between instructors and parents.
7. Oversee the budget, order program snacks, and submit billing information to the Business Office each trimester.
Among the duties assigned to this position for the Cathedral Cubs Program
1. Hire counselors to lead the week of activities.
2. Purchase all supplies and snacks necessary.
3. Point of contact for program staff and on-call if program is in need of anything.
Qualifications
1. Previous experience developing and leading activities for children, ages 8-12, preferably in an educational environment (school, after-school program, camp, or day care center).
2. College degree and/or Masters.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
1. Knowledge of the principles of positive youth development.
2. Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a variety of audiences including faculty, staff, children, and parents.
3. First Aid and CPR certification within last 3 months preferred (or certification may be completed during training period, before working with the children).
