DESCRIPTION: Americans are constantly being reminded that its students are falling behind those in other countries. The news media trumpets the results of international tests showing U.S. children dropping in the rankings, leaving many to wonder about the nation's social and economic future. So, what's behind all of these headlines and reports? How have these other countries – the new "education superpowers" – been able to raise the performance of their education systems and improve outcomes for their students? What can we learn from them?

Journalist Amanda Ripley spent a year studying these questions, gathering research and following three American teenagers as they embarked on foreign exchange programs in Finland, South Korea and Poland, three countries recognized for their exceptional results with students. What she found may surprise you. Come hear Amanda discuss the findings in her book, The Smartest Kids in the World, and engage in a spirited discussion with her and others about how the U.S. can strengthen its education system.

Refreshments (beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks) will be available for purchase.

In addition, copies of The Smartest Kids in the World will be available for purchase.
