Good afternoon.
The American Enterprise Institute's (AEI) education policy department will be hosting two upcoming events: a panel discussion on higher education accreditation and the need for system reform on Monday, September 30; the other event will be on Tuesday, October 1 and will be a keynote with Louisiana Superintendent John White, during which he will discuss the current reform movement's effect on school system change and speak to his experience on transforming schools. All details are below. If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Empson (lauren.empson@aei.org).
Monday, September 30, A higher bar for higher ed: Reforming accreditation for the 21st century
There is an emerging belief among many higher education observers that the accreditation system that regulates American colleges and universities is failing consumers and stifling innovation. Institutions are accredited by an opaque peer-review process largely based on inputs, not student outcomes. As a result, even chronically underperforming schools rarely lose accreditation. And since accreditation controls access to federal student aid-the lifeblood of most institutions-the current system discourages innovation, as school leaders seek to conform to a particular conception of what college looks like.
At this event, a distinguished panel will discuss the findings of a new working paper and outline specific policy recommendations to reform accreditation for the 21st century.
If you are unable to attend, we welcome you to watch the event live: http://www.aei.org/events/2013/09/30/a-higher-bar-for-higher-ed-reforming-accreditation-for-the-21st-century/. The conversation will also be occurring via Twitter with the hashtag: #HigherBar.

Tuesday, October 1, Taking school reformers to task: Louisiana Chief John White on fixing K-12 reform
American K-12 schooling is awash in a sea of good intentions and ambitious reforms. In recent years, well-intentioned advocates have enacted numerous reforms on issues surrounding teacher quality, charter schooling, and digital learning. Will these reforms deliver on their promise and endure for generations to come, or will they become short-lived fads that at best underdeliver and at worst perpetuate the very problems they intended to solve?
At this event, Louisiana's influential state chief, John White, will argue that in order to maintain their positive influence on the American education system, today's reformers must be cautious not to create a status quo of their own. He will offer thoughts from the field on how education reformers can ensure that their efforts drive lasting change.
