Background
Promising Futures is a youth development pipeline for adolescents ages 11-24 that engages middle school youth in after-school curriculum based programming as AMBASSADORS; high school youth in curriculum based programming and/or as trained PEER EDUCATORS; and college/graduate level students as team ADVISORS to coach the ambassadors/peer educators. Promising Futures has teamed up with Black Women For..., a new woman-centered think tank on how to engage young black women ages 24 to 34 as leaders.
Purpose of Youth Workshop
Often, youth leadership is limited to 'exemplary' youth out front and center on and off campus. Promising Futures and Black Women For... describe leadership as someone who inspires and motivates change- and this is not always the most vocal or visible person. We want to honor, acknowledge, equip and invest in a range of youth leaders (that may lead from the front, middle or back) in a youth-centered leadership training. It will be co-led by Promising Futures peer educators and Black Women For... staff/partners. We are extending an invitation to just a few youth groups in the city, as this is a new pilot program.
Your proposed role
We ask that youth serving organizations nominate 3-4 black female students that can commit to attending the full one day retreat-style leadership workshop. These youth will come back to your organization to report on what they learned and share their leadership development/action plans. We will follow up with all trainees on their plans. We are determining if this will be via site visits or online via skype or posts on social media.
