Reporting in on progress for Bluegrass in the west: The Bull Run Bluegrass Music Association now has 26 on the roster and is looking to get a jam up for February. In cooperation with the Contemporary Music Center (CMC) in Haymarket, opportunities to study and play Bluegrass are being strengthened in the Bull Run Battlefield area. Bluegrass instrument lessons are now offered by CMC in addition to the formation of groups (according to skill level) to develop jamming skills. An in-progress expansion of space at CMC will support these programs. In the fall CMC will begin workshops and master classes.
Guitar lessons: CMC has a fine staff of guitar instructors. They are very supportive of the Bluegrass "push" and will work toward establishing active participation by students in establishing jam groups.
Banjo lessons: CMC Haymarket has not in the past offered Bluegrass banjo lessons. That has changed with the addition of Bruce Gair to the staff, offering Bluegrass banjo lessons on Mondays and Tuesdays noon to 9:00 p.m.
Strings teachers: The staff also offers fiddle and bass lessons and will soon offer mandolin to add to the complete program.
The CMC Bluegrass program will mirror CMC's existing and exciting "sit-up-and-take-notice-at-the-national-level" Rock Program the success of which has Rock bands forming, getting gigs in the area and appearing at an annual rock concert at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts. Menzie Pittman, CMC's owner, is now on the NAMM Board of Directors, in recognition of his talent as a music professional and his ability to make a difference in the lives of people. He is committed to helping establish Bluegrass opportunities in the area.
Bottom line: Please pass the word to your friends and acquaintances who live in the Prince William/Fauquier area that this is happening. They can contact Contemporary Music Center in Haymarket or Bruce Gair at wbgair@gmail.com or 703-407-2327 for more information about the program and the Bull Run Bluegrass Music Association.
