Under the general supervision of the Kingsbury Day School's administrative team, the Teacher is responsible for the development, implementation and continuous evaluation of a psycho-educational program for students with learning disabilities. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES 1. Under supervision, plans, develops and implements an individualized psycho-educational instructional program that meets the needs, strengths, interests and abilities of the students. 2. Under supervision, conducts formal and informal educational and/or academic assessments and interprets test results for parents, professionals and LEA representatives. 3. Under supervision, develops with team members and parents, an IEP or ILP for each student. 4. Plans for and utilized instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques to ensure student success and to monitor progress on IEP/ILP goals and objectives. 5. Creates a classroom environment that encourages student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning goals. 6. Prepares for classes that are assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor. 7. Takes all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. 8. Assists in the administrative team in the implementation of policies and rules which govern student life and behavior and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules for classroom behavior and procedures and maintains behavior management in a just and fair manner. 9. Makes provisions to be available to students and parents for education-related purposed outside of the instructional day when required and/or requested to do so under reasonable terms. 10. Functions as a case manager for assigned students, coordinates delivery of related services, schedules staff meetings and maintains parent communication. 11. Participates in team meetings for the purpose of case review and planning for students, faculty meetings, standing committees and in-service training programs. 12. Attends all annual reviews and IEP/ILP meetings. 13. Provides supervision and training to assistant teachers, dedicated aides and pre- service student teachers. 14. Performs tasks related to development and implementation of student life activities and programs. 15. Maintains classroom records in a complete and legible form, including obtaining consent forms and releases, data collection forms, progress and anecdotal notes. 16. Continues professional education in special education or in a related discipline by attending training institutes, local, regional and national conferences and by taking coursework. 17. Receives biweekly supervision from the Assistant Director of the KDS program or designated professional. 18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
The position of a special education teacher requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education. Must be certified for K through 12 in Learning Disabilities or non-categorical Special Education in the District of Columbia. Secondary teachers must hold certification in a content area in addition to special education certification. Demonstrated knowledge of the nature and needs of students with learning disabilities and attention disorders, normal developmental processes, curriculum development and programming, behavior management, psycho-educational assessment, and special education record keeping and monitoring tools. Demonstrated knowledge in content area for secondary school teachers. A minimum of three years experience is preferred in special education at the appropriate age/grade level.
