The Inspired Teacher Certification Program
The Inspired Teacher Certification Program is a state-accredited 24-month teacher preparation program that recruits, selects, prepares, supports, and certifies highly qualified individuals who wish to serve the children of the District of Columbia as teachers. Inspired Teaching Fellows begin their teaching career with a Residency year, working under the guidance of a Lead Teacher, gaining the knowledge and experience to enable a smooth transition into their teaching career. Then, in the Fellowship year, Fellows, as teachers of record in their own DC classroom, continue taking coursework and receive increased mentoring. The Inspired Teacher Certification Program prepares educators in two areas: Early Childhood and Elementary Education.
Spending a year as a Fellow-in-Residence provides a unique opportunity to be prepared to teach from within the classroom - something that a traditional graduate program cannot provide. Residents have a full year to develop the skills of engaging diverse students, managing a classroom, and planning an effective lesson. Additionally, because Residents are simultaneously enrolled in an alternative certification program, they are able to use their in-class experience to better frame their coursework in light of their real-world experience. The teachers who enter the classroom at the end of the Residency are more prepared for the challenges of teaching in an urban, high-poverty classroom, decreasing the likelihood that they will leave the profession after a few years.
Center for Inspired Teaching: A Different Approach to Teacher Education
Since 1995, Center for Inspired Teaching has been committed to building a better school experience for children by transforming the role of the teacher from information provider to Instigator of Thought. Inspired Teaching's innovative approach to teacher education is characterized by interactive lessons that engage participants in generating solutions to the challenges of teaching. Participants learn, discover, and create instructional methods that actively engage learners, emphasize depth over breadth, and foster critical and creative thinking. Inspired Teaching's professional development model is supported by evidence-based research about how people learn. Our programs are based in best practices in teacher education and in the belief that every student possesses the ability to think critically, understand information, and solve complex problems. Inspired Teachers are Instigators of Thought who teach students how to think, not what to think and instill in their students the 4 I's: Intellect, Inquiry, Imagination, and Integrity.
Central to Inspired Teaching's professional development is a process that encourages teachers to rethink their role. Inspired Teachers are changemakers in their classrooms, schools, and society as a whole. Becoming a part of Inspired Teaching means joining a movement to redefine the role of the teacher and change the experience that children have in school.
Key aspects of the program:
· Begin your teaching career as a Resident in an innovative urban school that is dedicated to supporting new teachers. Become immersed in best teaching practices for a full year under the guidance of an experienced Lead Teacher who models exceptional instructional approaches.
· During the Residency year, participants teach under a DC Regular I provisional licensure. Upon successful completion of the program, Fellows are eligible for a DC Regular II license, a 4-year renewable teacher certification.
· Fellows can access partnerships with local universities to simultaneously earn a master's degree.
· Ongoing coursework and intensive mentoring continue throughout the first 2 years of teaching, including support in securing a teaching position in a DC public or public charter school for the Fellowship year.
· During the Residency year, participants will receive access to AmeriCorps member benefits for service, including loan deferment and a $5,550 educational award, which can be used to pay back student loans, or for future educational expenses, including tuition at our partner universities.
· Inspired Teaching Fellows commit to a minimum of three years of teaching in a DC public or charter school upon graduation from the program.
What Does It Take to Become an Inspired Teaching Fellow-in-Residence?
Inspired Teaching is interested in attracting passionate, hard-working individuals from all walks of life to become outstanding teachers. Admission is highly selective but is open to recent college graduates, mid-career professionals, early retirees, or others with at least a bachelor's degree and the personal characteristics that will enable them to advance educational reform. Specifically, we are looking for individuals who demonstrate:
- Willingness to embrace teaching the whole child
- Potential for leadership in and beyond the classroom
- Holistic, asset-based approach to problem-solving
- Commitment to self-reflection
- Respect for teaching as a profession
- Fit with Inspired Teaching's mission and values
- High standards of professionalism
Minimum eligibility requirements are as follows:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree; must be conferred by June 30, 2013.
- US citizenship or permanent resident status
- Minimum GPA
- If you are a recent college graduate (less than 5 years of work experience): 3.0 on a 4.0 scale OR 3.25 in the major area.
- If you have more than 5 years of work experience: 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
o Consideration may be given for outstanding personal/professional achievement.

Residency-year salary is $25,000, plus health and other benefits. During the Fellowship year, Inspired Teaching Fellows become full-time employees of DCPS or the public charter school where they teach. Accordingly, Fellows are paid by their employer and receive the same salary and benefits as other beginning teachers. Inspired Teaching actively works with Fellows to secure a teaching placement for the Fellowship year.
