50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now is a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address. We help develop local education leaders by providing them with the research, tools and ideas needed to create learning environments that best meet every child's needs. We focus our work on starting earlier, expanding choices, aiming higher, rewarding talent and reaching everyone. 50CAN operates campaigns in Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island and is led by CEO & founder Marc Porter Magee.

About the Job

As part of 50CAN's national Growth team, the development associate will research and assist in implementing strategies and projects to support 50CAN's state fundraising efforts. This position reports to the Foundations Manager.

Position is based in Washington, D.C.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct top-notch, thoughtful and thorough foundation prospect research, and provide succinct research briefs to state staff.
  • Collaborate with state teams to track state campaign metrics for use in grant reporting.
  • Manage and streamline a database of submitted grant documents.
  • Write on-message grant documents (LOIs, proposals, reports).
  • Collaborate with national fundraising team to copy edit grant documents.
  • Execute thorough analysis on individual donor prospects, with an ability to make shrewd, actionable recommendations to state staff.
  • Manage an efficient and error-free system for donation processing for both national and state fundraising teams.
  • Coordinate workflow of state fundraising initiatives throughout the organization to ensure each project is completed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Create customized branded materials for fundraising events and meetings (PowerPoint presentations, one-pagers, etc.)
Key Skills, Abilities and Experience:
  • Minimum two years experience in fundraising and/or the nonprofit sector, gained through employment and/or relevant internships.
  • Strong research instincts and demonstrated research outcomes; experience gathering and interpreting donor data.
  • Supremely organized systems-thinker; exhaustive and unwavering attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills (ability to talk and write about advocacy a plus).
  • Proficient in Google applications and Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Commitment to 50CAN's mission.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative.
  • Sense of humor, strong work ethic, "roll-up-my-sleeves" attitude and willingness to do "whatever it takes."
