[YEP-DC] Job Posting: FT Education Director and PT Educator Support for Academic Programs Positions Available at Horton's Kids

Horton’s Kids is a 25-year-old organization that seeks to educate and empower the children of Washington, DC’s Ward 8 and prepare them for successful and healthy lives through targeted academic supports, enrichment opportunities, and basic needs services.  Horton’s Kids believes that every child can succeed, no matter their circumstance, and envisions a community in which all children graduate from high school ready for college, career, and life.

Education Director

Horton’s Kids’ is seeking an Education Director to set the vision for educational programming and provide approximately 150 children in grades K-12 with academic supports that will keep them on track for high school graduation and college-and career-readiness.  The Education Director reports directly to the Executive Director and leads a team that includes the following staff people: Educational Advocacy Manager, Education Lead – K-6, Education Lead – Older Youth, Program Assistants/Neighborhood Representatives, Education Vista, and part-time educators to support academic programming.  Salary is commensurate with experience.

 

Role and Responsibilities:

o   Managing several direct reports by providing guidance and feedback, identifying opportunities for staff development, and serve as a thought partner.

o   Identifying the academic needs of program participants.  Overseeing the refinement/development and implementation of education programs to address those needs.

o   Monitoring the performance of program participants and ensuring those participants who are at-risk are connected with the appropriate resources.

o   Keeping abreast of new research, instructional strategies, and resources to improve programming.

o   Supporting educational advocacy efforts to enroll students in high performing schools and ensure special education needs are addressed.

o   Developing relationships with key players in the DC education community. Monitoring DCPS, PCSB, and the schools where program participants attend to identify potential shifts in instruction, school day, etc.

o   Developing and monitoring key program performance indicators and outcomes.  Continually evaluating and improving the efficacy of education programs through formative and summative assessments and other validated measures. 

o   Contributing to cross-cutting program policies, including behavior management, attendance, enrollment policies and processes, etc.

o   Coordinating with the Enrichment and Youth Development Director to infuse education programming with critical life skills and youth development strategies.

o   Coordinating with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure adequate training and participation of the organization’s more than 500 volunteers.

o   Supporting the organization’s fundraising efforts.

o   Participating in key organizational events to engage the community and/or program participants.

o   Acting as a member of the organization’s leadership team along with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Director of Enrichment and Youth Development, and Development Director.

 

 

Qualifications:

o   At least three years of experience as an effective educator of at-risk student populations and at least five years of cumulative work experience in relevant fields, such as: teaching, school administration, educational programming, educational advocacy, etc.

o   Deep understanding of the context and needs of children coming from high poverty communities

o   Passion for social justice and children

o   Demonstrated leadership among peers or of a team, particularly in situations that require perseverance and creativity

o   Familiarity with the Common Core of State Standards

o   Knowledge of blended learning and project-based instruction

o   Experience with academic intervention strategies

o   Understanding of formative assessments, outcomes measurement, and program evaluation

o   Good verbal and written communication skills

o   Excellent project management skills

o   Comfortable working in our Community Resource Center in Ward 8 

o   Flexible schedule – able to work evenings and a few weekends

o   Knowledge of special education and the IEP process is preferred

Part-Time Educator Support for Academic Programs

Horton’s Kids is looking for current and former effective teachers to participate in after-school programming on a part-time basis beginning September 8th thru December 12th.  Teachers will be paid $35/hour

 

Horton’s Kids is seeking teachers to participate in academic programming during the following times:

o   Mondays: 6:15-8:15 for grades K-6, and 4:00*-6:00 and 6:00-8:00 for grades 7-12.

o   Tuesdays: 6:15-8:15 for grades K-6 and 5:15-6:30 for grades 7-12.

o   Wednesdays: 4:00-5:15 for grades K-6, and 4:00*-6:00 for grades 7-12.

o   Thursdays: 4:00*-6:00 for grades 7-12. 

(*NOTE: While 4:00 is the preferred start time for 7-12 programming on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, some flexibility to accommodate teacher schedules may be possible.)

 

Teachers would be asked to provide academic support to students on homework as well as literacy and math supplements, assess student proficiency in reading and math, and provide instructional support to volunteer tutors working with students.  Applicants should have experience with working with at-risk student populations.  Familiarity with the Common Core and blended learning models is a plus.  K-6 programs take place in Rayburn House Office Building and Department of Education, and 7-12 programs take place near the Navy Yard and in Anacostia.
