[dcab-l] Songs from the South: Clinch Mt. Backstep

Music Lovers:

Here's a live Rattlesnake Hill  recording from Cactus Flats, a venue just north of Fredrick, Md. on Route 15, recorded on Father's Day, 2013.

Clinch Mountain, home of the Stanley Brothers, is a mountain ridge in the U.S. states of Tennessee and Virginia, lying in the ridge-and-valley section of the Appalachian Mountains; it runs in a generally east-northeasterly direction, and separates the Clinch River basin, to the north, and the Holston River basin, to the south.

Clinch Mountain Backstep, written by Dr. Ralph Stanley, is an especially interesting banjo tune because it includes one extra "half-measure" in Part B (the backstep), and is a staple in almost every bluegrass banjo picker's repertoire. Some dazzling picking in this cut!

Musicians:

  John Brunschwyler  Banjo

  Garrett Wren          Mandolin

  Barb Diederich        Bass

  Ed Schaeffer           Rhythm Guitar
