[YEP-DC] Job Announcement

 UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM

ACADEMIC INSTRUCTOR POSITION (ENGLISH)

 

OVERVIEW

The mission of the University of the District of Columbia Upward Bound Program is to provide low income/first generation DCPS students with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to successfully graduate from high school and enroll in and complete postsecondary education. We serve youth in grades 9 – 12. Our program provides academic support for high school success and addresses a wide variety of learning needs. Our year-round program centers on rigorous coursework and co-curricular activities which include college tours, educational workshops, tutoring, etc.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructors are responsible for assisting in the development of curriculum, needs assessment, and pre and post-tests. They must develop and maintain lesson plans and evaluations, provide classroom instruction in assigned academic courses, assess student needs and provide tutorials as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in planning of courses and instruction in designated course areas for Upward Bound participants.
  • Responsible for submitting a lesson plan, course descriptions, calculate students' grades.
  • Provide a written evaluation on each project participant enrolled in class at the end of the advisory.
  • Attend staff meetings with other teachers.

·         Provide classroom instruction and tutorial assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degrees in an academic discipline preferred.
  • Experience in teaching high school English to youth with disparate learning needs.
  • Certification preferred.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of working with low income/first generation college students.
  • Experience with  a multicultural student population
  • Ability to communicate with students and other staff.

Days/ Dates

Classes are held on twenty-six Saturdays during the academic year. The program is scheduled to run from September 27, 2014 (orientation) through May 16, 2015.

 

Hours

Classes are approximately 55 minutes in duration and meet between 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
