[YEP-DC] Thomas B. Fordham Institute: Research and Staff Assistant position opening

Would you like to work at the forefront of the national education-reform movement? Are you a personable, organized, and detail-oriented self-starter? Are you comfortable handling varied responsibilities? Calm under fire? A born multi-tasker? A resourceful researcher? A savvy writer/editor?

If so, you might be the Thomas B. Fordham Institute's new D.C.-based research and staff assistant. This is a great opportunity for someone launching a career in education policy and nonprofit or project management. The research + staff assistant will work directly with Fordham's president (Chester E. Finn, Jr.) and executive vice president (Michael J. Petrilli) and will split his/her time between project-based research and office and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

The research and staff assistant will divide his/her time between two sets of activities. Specific duties and responsibilities will include the following:

Research (approximately 50 percent)

  • Providing day-to-day support on selected Fordham research projects, especially those led by Chester Finn
  • Gathering and analyzing data for Fordham's in-house studies
  • Conducting preliminary investigation of a variety of education topics as needed (e.g., to determine whether the topic is viable for further study and conducting reviews of the current literature on that topic)
  • Writing synopses of education news and research for Fordham's weekly newsletter, the Education Gadfly

Administrative (approximately 50 percent)

  • Coordinating extensive travel arrangements, scheduling meetings, as well as providing overall administrative support for Fordham's president and executive vice president
  • Supporting needs of other senior staff—including travel, scheduling, and mailings—as needed
  • Providing general office support—including mail-handling, copying, and other tasks—as needed
  • Helping to plan happy hours, staff lunches, and other morale-boosting activities
  • Answering phones and greeting guests

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and demonstrated academic excellence
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; must be comfortable working directly with a wide variety of people, from Cabinet members to random callers
  • Savvy with Word and Excel
  • Eagerness to work hard, learn, and do everything necessary to support one's colleagues
  • Knowledge of education reform
  • A pleasant personality, professional demeanor, even keel, and sense of humor

Additional Information

Office location: Downtown D.C. (Farragut Square)

Salary: Commensurate with experience (upper-$30Ks to $40K)

Benefits: Very generous (full health and dental, three weeks' worth of paid vacation, retirement plan, and metro/parking reimbursement)
