[YEP-DC] Higher Achievement Seeks Recreation Coach

Higher Achievement seeks to hire two Recreation Coaches for our Ward 7 and Ward 8 Achievement Centers.

This is a part-time, three hour per week position lasting from January to May during one of Higher Achievement's rigorous out-of-school time terms. The position is at our Ward 7 Achievement Center (301 49th Street NE) and our Ward 8 Achievement Center (908 Wahler Place SE). Coaches attend a one-hour orientation and training preceding the term's start. Using Higher Achievement's progressive and uplifting cultural model, coaches design and teach an elective class that is structured, encourages physical activity, and the development of positive self esteem. Candidates should have ample experience working with middle school youth and be prepared to submit lesson plans and/or a curriculum detailing what they plan to teach.

AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Elective class design

·          Design an elective class syllabus, outlining objectives and activities for each class during the term

·          Be prepared and on time for every class session with a complete lesson plan and necessary materials

 

Instruction and Classroom management

·          Supervise and manage an elective class of between 10 and 20 students that has students actively engaged and learning new skills

·          Support Higher Achievement's Learning Community by linking the subject matter taught with the principles of freedom, justice, solidarity, and voice

·          Reinforce Higher Achievement's philosophies and positive work culture with students

·          Students are offered engaging, interesting, and well-managed elective classes daily

·          Students learn new skills in cultural, artistic, and physical movement topics that they otherwise may not learn in school

 

Qualifications

·          High school diploma or equivalent required, college students welcome to apply

·          Dynamic, flexible, culturally sensitive applicants with positive personalities required

·          At least one year's teaching experience with middle school aged students strongly preferred

·          Interest in community building, mentoring, and youth development preferred

·          Strong classroom management skills
