[YEP-DC] Students Wanted: 2013 Urban Journalism Workshop for D.C.-area high school students

Dear Colleagues:

I'd like to bring a great opportunity for the region's high school students to your attention and ask that you share the information with those in your network who can make sure interested students are aware of this opportunity.

The Urban Journalism Workshop is co-sponsored by the Washington Association of Black Journalists and The Washington Post's Young Journalists Development Program and is designed to give D.C.-area high school students exposure to journalism.

Since its inception in 1986, UJW has introduced hundreds of D.C.-area high school students to media careers through an intensive skills-building workshop held each spring for eight weeks

Professional journalists teach the students on eight consecutive Saturdays each spring from late February/early March through April. The students choose one of three segments: newspaper/online, radio news or television news. The students produce a newspaper, a 30-minute radio news show and a 30-minute television news show. The workshop is open to all high school students.

The workshop is open to all high school students attending area public and private schools. Nearly three dozen students from across the region will be selected in an application process to participate in this spring's workshop. This year's applications are due on Jan. 25.

We will also award scholarships in the spring to three deserving, college-bound high school seniors who have demonstrated excellence and are planning to pursue journalism careers.

As a graduate of this program who now serves as its coordinator, I can personally attest to the value of this experience for young people who are considering careers in journalism and mass communications.

To apply, students can visit www.wabj-dc.org and click on the tab that is labeled Urban Journalism Workshop to download an application.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Dakarai I. Aarons
Coordinator, Urban Journalism Workshop
