The DC Teaching Fellows program is currently seeking Launch Skills Instructors and Teacher Development Coaches for 2013 Summer Pre-service Training. These positions will be based in Washington, DC and are available for the summer of 2013.
The goal of DCTF's six-week Pre-Service Training (PST) is that every Fellow is prepared to achieve immediate, measurable success with their students in the fall. Our Fast Start training approach focuses on a small number of essential skills, from delivering lessons clearly to maintaining high behavioral expectations. We believe Fellows must master these skills before the first day of school to have a strong start to the school year and be prepared to master more advanced skills more quickly. During PST, Fellows' time will be comprised of four primary components: Field Experience, Coaching Sessions, Skill-building Cycles, and Peer Collaborative Planning Groups. Fellows will gain content through these four components, which all promote mastery of the Fast Start skills.
Teacher Development Coach
The Teacher Development Coach observes and provides feedback to a group of about 12 Fellows on their instruction and ability to demonstrate mastery of key launch skills in their Field Experience classrooms. Teacher Development Coaches are responsible for the development and growth of their group of Fellows. The Field Experience is set in a district summer school classroom where Fellows are paired with a peer and lead instruction. The Teacher Development Coach must be able to provide specific, actionable, on-the-spot feedback to Fellows in addition to being able to plan and execute daily, one-hour, responsive skill-building coaching experiences for Fellows that are based on performance data.
Launch Skills Instructors
The Launch Skills Instructor plays an integral role in the success of PST by planning and facilitating skill-building cycles, in which Fellows see specific teaching skills modeled, then practice and receive feedback on their performance before using the skills with students in the summer school classroom. Launch Skills Instructors must be effective teachers with deep content knowledge and the ability to model content-specific skills for participants in skill-building sessions.
DC Teaching Fellows is seeking candidates who have, in addition to strong critical thinking and communication skills and a results-oriented approach, at least two years of teaching experience in under-performing schools and previous experience developing and leading teachers' professional development. The positions will require a part-time commitment from March to mid-June and will be full-time from mid-June to mid-August.
More detailed descriptions of the positions are attached, including application deadlines and instructions for applying. Candidates can contact Emily Appel at emily.appel@tntp.org.
