[YEP-DC] Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic

 

 

We'd love applications from any interested YEP-DC members for our Teacher position working in a residential substance abuse treatment program for adolescent girls.  Clients are either enrolled in an independent on-line school or completing school work from their traditional high school while they're living in our program, so this position is a mix of individual and group instruction and support.  Please send a resume and cover letter to lbethel at phoenixhouse dot org.  Position available immediately, open until filled.
 
TITLE:                 School Teacher

PROGRAM:      Girls Recovery Lodge

STATUS:             Exempt

SUPERVISOR:  VP/Director of Enhancement & Program Director

 

 

SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for academic services of clients in the Program.  Duties include, but are not limited to, completion of Individualized Education Plans (IPP), IEP, Accommodations upon admissions, making contact with home school jurisdictions to gather status and materials, monitoring client progress in school setting, presenting clients in staffing; maintaining contact with appropriate individuals from home school jurisdictions and providing primary counselor with final report upon discharge and conducting Concerned Person lecture.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  • Maintain client academic files
  • Review school admission information and notes.  Completes IPP and Accommodations
  • Maintain and document all changes and progress in client's behavior in accurate, chronological progress notes, if applicable
  • Initiate and document contact with all school divisions and/or guardians
  • Ensure that all documentation is maintained according to state and DOE licensure regulations
  • Document progression through academic subject areas in weekly progress reports and presents in weekly staffings
  • Complete final reports on all clients to be discharged

§       Develop lesson plans and conducting academic lectures

§       Conduct academic instructions in all subject areas

  • Conduct Concerned Person lecture on rotating basis
  • Maintain ethical standards and continued professional growth, including
    1. Abide by Program and PHMA policy and procedures
    2. Ensure all CARF standards are instituted and maintained
    3. Promote, in public and private contacts, the quality standards and ethical practices of PHMA staff
    4. Continue professional growth by attending workshops, trainings and staff in-service trainings to increase skill and knowledge and to set appropriate example for staff
    5. Maintain current licensure/certification including FEAR, CPR, First Aid, and Medication Management
    6. Maintain professional boundaries with staff and clients

           

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in teaching or related field
  • Current Teaching License,  preferably endorsement (at least provisional) in Special Education (ED/LD)
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working in school, preferably a residential setting
  • Certification as a substance abuse counselor or eligible for certification within one year

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

 

  • Knowledge of SOL requirements for middle and high school students in Virginia
  • Knowledgeable about the subjects they teach, teachers must have the ability to communicate, Able to inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students
  • Understand the students' educational and emotional needs.
  • Demonstrate patience and consideration in dealing with others
  • Demonstrate thoughtful decision-making
  • Able to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and
  • Able to employ different teaching methods that will result in higher student achievement organized, dependable, patient, and creative
  • Able to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with as a team member with teachers, clinical and residential staff, and parents
  • Ability to proactively deal with substance-abusing populations.
  • Ability to maintain organization, discipline and documentation.
  • Ability to comply with internal, local, state and federal policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrate appropriate boundaries between self and clients
  • Ensure client confidentiality in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations

Would anybody be interested in getting together for a group bike ride to Turkey Thicket or Judiciary Square on Saturday, May 5 or May 12? (I am not a cyclist, but would be willing to try to organize the ride and a post ride happy hour at a Bloomingdale pub.)

This is a very important election, and everyone should make it a priority to vote.

If you are not registered to vote, you can present id and a utility bill at the polls and vote!!!

This is an election where every vote will count,. Wouldn't you like to be able to say that it was your vote that made the difference?!?

School Description:
The LAYC Career Academy sets high expectations for disconnected youth, 16-24 years of age, by providing a college preparatory GED curriculum and the opportunity to gain college credits before graduation. The school is built upon the central beliefs that:

· Students grow by recognizing their own strengths, using them to overcome obstacles, and setting and achieving ambitious academic and career goals.

· Disconnected youth will succeed academically and personally with the help of high-quality, culturally appropriate education and support services.
All graduates will complete a college preparatory curriculum that is aligned to Common Core State Standards and pass the GED exam. Students will also achieve one of three outcomes before graduating: become a Medical Assistant; become an A+ Certified Computer Hardware Technician; or complete six college credits through the Career Academy's partnership with the Community College of the District of Columbia.
The LAYC Career Academy will open in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington DC in the fall of 2012 with 100 students and eleven teachers, growing to a full enrollment of 200 students and eighteen teachers in the fall of 2014. About Upward Bound at the Latin American Youth Center
Upward Bound is a federally funded college access program that empowers potential first generation college students to complete secondary education and continue through college. Students also participate in a six week summer component at the George Washington University that consists of two weeks of residential instruction, culminating with a week-long out-of state college tour. Job Description: Children's Education Program Coordinator

Enova, an innovative company dedicated to closing the digital divide and the educational gap in Mexico, seeks to hire a K-12 Education Specialist to assist in developing and coordinating an extra-curricular educational program that will promote the development of communication, math, ITC and science competencies in underpriviledged children in the state of Mexico. Courses are offered by teachers at 70+ community education centers throughout the state via the Learning and Innovation Network (Red de Innovacion y Aprendizaje - http://www.ria.org.mx/). They are delivered in a blended mode that takes advantage of face-to-face human interaction as well as well as the educational potential of technology.

 

The Children´s Education Program Coordinator will work closely with Senior Management at Enova, the Teacher Development Leader, the content development team, and the network of teachers to plan and supervise the implementation of the children´s courses and monitor results.

 

Responsibilities

·         Design a curriculum for the extra-curricular children´s (K-9) educational program to consolidate reading, math, ITC and science competencies.

·         Plan the courses or modules of the program and coordinate the design and production of educational resources.

·         Organize the implementation of the program, including scheduling criteria, teacher recruitment and training, and content-specific pedagogical support.

·         Monitor and analyze educational quality indicators and assess results.

·         Prepare reports and related documents assessing program impact.

·         Design strategies for educational quality improvement.

·         Plan and conduct research related with children´s education that can enrich the program.

·         Participate in institutional educational planning.

·         Coordinate special educational projects for children to be implemented at RIA Centers.

·         Perform other tasks related with the children´s education program.

 

Skills and requirements:

·         Children's education specialist with knowledge of instructional technology, curriculum design, teacher training, and learning assessment.

·         Graduate degree in curriculum and instruction, instructional technology, reading and literacy, math or science or other fields related with children's education preferred.

·         Experience in teaching underpriviledged children, curriculum design and development of high quality instructional materials, educational use of technology, b-learning or e-learning, teacher training and supervision.

·         Ability to work well both independently and in a team setting

·         Proficiency in Spanish required and familiarization with Mexican context highly preferred.

Job Description
ChildFund International is seeking an Education Specialist to provide technical leadership for community-based education programming designed to enhance access, retention, equity and quality for children experiencing deprivation, exclusion and vulnerability.  This position offers the opportunity to work with country teams to support program design, implementation, evaluation and learning in line with ChildFund's theory of change for Children and Young Adolescents.  Through intensive, sustained collaboration, the Education Specialist will impact community level, holistic education programming in formal, non-formal and informal settings.  The Specialist fulfills functions around technical leadership, representation and business development.
As a technical resource, the Specialist works with regional and national staff to achieve program quality goals.  S/he provides technical assistance to national offices to support ChildFund's program strategy for children and young adolescents, with a specific focus on programs for literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills in formal, non-formal and informal settings.  The Specialist supports the development of conceptual leadership on key topics. S/he administers learning agenda functions including contribution to development of materials, convening community of practice and facilitating dialogue with and between national offices and partners.
The Specialist serves representation functions for the organization, including attending industry events, networking and advocacy functions in support of organizational profile and building ChildFund's understanding of evidence based practice for deprived, excluded and vulnerable children.
As both a technical and a business development resource, the Specialist prepares capacity statements and concept notes for proposal development. S/he meets with donors to present ChildFund programs and approaches in service of relationship manager cultivation strategies.

Required Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Comparative International Education or related field with course work in community development, international development or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • 5 years of experience in community based child development programming with at least 2 years of international experience preferred
  • Experience with education programming in developing country contexts for marginalized populations (design, delivery and assessment), including alternative education strategies, participatory school governance, educational quality improvement processes, gender, and school transitions
  • Demonstrated experience in formal, non-formal and informal education
  • Knowledge of educational assessment and evaluation tools and methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience in developing successful education program proposals, including design and writing of technical strategies.
  • Proven ability to provide high quality technical assistance to implementing staff and partners.
  • Experience with USG donor agencies and grant making processes (e.g. USAID).
  • Familiarity with bilateral and multilateral agencies, foundations and other institutions working on global education and working on issues of equity, including their program and funding strategies
  • Demonstrated experience with professional networks and fora related to the technical requirements within the Life Stage
  • Experience with qualitative and participatory inquiry methods preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Excellent presentation, public speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual preferred (English with French, Spanish, and/or Portuguese)
  • Strong computer skills, with familiarity in MS Office Suite (particularly Word and PowerPoint)
  • Significant Travel outside of the US required.
