The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
Strategy and Planning: Establish 5-year strategic plan for LGBTQ services on campus including staffing, budget, programming, research, policy support, etc. Develop office policies and procedures. Cultivate and maintain positive image of LGBTQ student services and the broader Johns Hopkins community among various constituencies. Provide leadership in developing programs and services that promote the academic, personal and professional achievement of the LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff and actively create a safer campus climate.
Programming: Develop broad awareness and support for issues of particular concern for LGBTQ stakeholders as well as serve as a principal advisor to the larger community on LGBTQ issues. Collaborate with various university departments, campus and community-based LGBTQ organizations (DSAGA, The Network, Gertrude Stein Group, etc.) as well as corporate and community leaders to implement programs and events. Provide education programs such as Ally and Safe Zone Training. Establish virtual LGBTQ presence and website content, including development, promotion and management of newly developed OUTList. Review programming and services annually. Work with academic departments and programs to develop and sponsor programs of intellectual and cultural significance to LGBTQ students and scholars.
Advocacy and Advising: Advise students in group and individual settings. Refer students to other University departments (e.g. The Counseling Center, Academic Advising, etc.) or outside organizations when necessary. Provide resources and support for faculty, staff and students with issues related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression. Conduct ongoing assessment of students' needs, campus climate and office services.
Institutional Support: Advise Dean of Student Life on matters pertaining to LGBTQ student issues. Support efforts to establish and develop an LGBTQ alumni group. Collaborate with Admissions offices across the Johns Hopkins Institutions to improve Johns Hopkins' ability to attract and retain LGBTQ students. Serve as a resource for campus administrators, faculty and staff regarding policy development, subject-area expertise and support in matters relating to the needs of LGBTQ students. Serve as an expert for the Faculty, Staff and Administration. Review University-wide policies and materials and recommend changes to make them more inclusive.
Bachelors degree in Higher Education Administration, Women's Studies, Counseling, Sociology, Psychology or other relevant field required. Advanced degree preferred. Five years demonstrated progressive experience in programming and advocacy in a University setting required. Experience in programming and advocacy for the LGBTQ community preferred.
Special skills and knowledge: Demonstrated progressive administrative experience in programming and advocacy for the LGBTQ population; commitment to and understanding of issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied students, faculty and staff; and demonstrated experience with collaboration, community organizing and supervision of volunteers and undergraduate and graduate students. The director should have knowledge of current literature and research in LGBTQ studies. Candidate should be able to demonstrate successful leadership and program administration.
Note: Beyond 3 years, position may be contingent upon additional funding.
