Assessments have become a major driver for education policy and practice in the United States. The Gordon Commission on the Future of Assessment in Education invites you to the release of two reports that critique and support this trend, while also discussing the possibilities for expanding the purpose of educational assessments to inform, improve and model teaching and learning processes and outcomes.

Reporting on work conducted over the past two years, the Commission is calling attention to the rich but problematic history of educational assessments and advocates that future efforts be directed at assessment for education. The event will open with remarks from Kurt Landgraf, President and CEO of Educational Testing Service (ETS). James Pellegrino, Co-chair of the Commission, will present the public policy report and Edmund W. Gordon, Chairperson of the Commission, will present the technical report. The presentations will be followed by discussion between Commission members Eva Baker, UCLA; Robert Mislevy, ETS; and Elena Silva, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Commission member Governor Robert Wise, Alliance for Excellent Education, will present the closing remarks.

The report release session will be followed by a symposium organized and hosted by George Washington University and the National Academy of Education (NAEd) at which several members of the Academy will present their comments and critiques about the Gordon Commission reports. The session will include NAEd's President-Elect Michael Feuer, George Washington University; Robert M. Hauser, National Research Council and National Academy of Sciences; and Robert Linn, University of Colorado at Boulder, as discussants; and Susan Fuhrman, President of the NAEd and Teachers College, Columbia University, as moderator.

About the Gordon Commission on the Future of Assessment in Education
A two-year study group composed of thought leaders, trailblazers and innovators in academia, research and policy, the Gordon Commission seeks to harness emerging developments in the pedagogical, cognitive and technological sciences to improve educational assessment — now and into the mid-21st century. Its mission is to analyze the best assessment practices and our nation's current and future educational needs, and generate recommendations that will improve pedagogical practice, educational measurement and student achievement.

The Gordon Commission was established by ETS to investigate and advise on the nature and use of educational testing in the 21st century.
