MANAGER, GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

 

NASSP seeks Government Relations Manager to become an important member of the team responsible for advancing NASSP's advocacy and policy agenda, and helps to support the "national voice" of the association through grassroots advocacy and direct lobbying of congressional staff and Department of Education officials.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Provide dynamic leadership to NASSP's grassroots advocacy efforts by maintaining the Principal's Legislative Action Center and sending relevant and timely action alerts to NASSP members. Manage the State Lobbyists Network and the Federal Grassroots Network, including weekly e-mail updates and quarterly conference calls.                                      

·         Track and report on legislative developments in federal budget and appropriations process and serve as liaison to the Committee for Education Funding.  

·         Speak at state association and regional conferences upon request to share information on federal policy and appropriations, NASSP's positions and actions around key issues, and to share opportunities and resources for grassroots advocacy with NASSP including the Federal Grassroots Network. Also upon request, speak at NASSP's student activities conferences to middle and high school students on the importance of advocacy and civic engagement.                                                

·         Vigorously advocate on behalf of NASSP positions to a variety of external audiences, including congressional staff, Department of Education officials, and representatives of other national education organizations. Participate in and serve as lead NASSP staff in other coalitions of which NASSP is a member, including organizing webinars and Hill meetings and briefings for the coalition.

·         Attend meetings and hearings on federal education policy and provide reports related to these activities.                                  

·         Maintain advocacy content of the NASSP Web site and the Principal's Policy Blog.                                                                                                                                              

·         Draft letters to members of Congress and articles for NewsLeader regarding NASSP legislative priorities.                                                                                               

·         Co-lead legislative conferences for state coordinators and Hill Days for state principals of the year, state assistant principals of the year, and NASSP Board of Directors; including development of content, selection and invitation of speakers, preparation of briefing materials, planning and moderating of events, and conducting follow-up meetings with congressional staff.

·         Collaborate with other NASSP departments to better integrate advocacy into all organizational goals and objectives.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

·         Minimum bachelor's degree in Political Science or education

·         3-5 years' experience in education policy and Hill experience preferred

·         Analytical and critical thinking skills a must

·         Good writing skills and excellent presentation skills required

·         Knowledge of the Federal budget and appropriations process a plus

 

Salary:  $45,000-$50,000 with excellent benefits package. Send resume and
