Please join us for a symposium hosted by The Century Foundation:

William Julius Wilson's The Truly Disadvantaged: 25 Years Later

Friday, September 28, 2012
10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (includes lunch)
The Washington Court Hotel, 525 New Jersey Avenue NW, Washington DC

There is no cost to attend. RSVP is required to Events@TCF.org with "WilsonEventYEP" in the subject line. Seating is limited.

Since it was first published in 1987, William Julius Wilson's The Truly Disadvantaged has had an enormous impact on the way Americans understand and respond to the problems of racially and economically isolated inner-city neighborhoods. On the 25th anniversary of the book's publication, The Century Foundation will host a symposium featuring Dr. Wilson and a roster of experts from the fields of urban poverty, urban inequality, and race relations to reflect on how the nature of concentrated poverty has changed and whether the response of the policy community has been sufficient to the challenges posed.

Bookending Dr. Wilson's keynote address will be two panel discussions. The morning session will feature a panel moderated by NPR's Claudio Sanchez entitled "An Empirical Discussion: What Has Changed and What Has Remained the Same with Respect to Poverty Concentrations Since 1987?" Participants include Paul Jargowsky of Rutgers University, Robert Sampson of Harvard University, Stefanie Deluca of Johns Hopkins University, and Kathryn Edin of Harvard.

"Lessons for Policy: How Important Is It to Address Concentrated Poverty in Education and Housing?" will be the focus of an afternoon discussion among author and urban policy consultant, David Rusk; Richard Kahlenberg of The Century Foundation; Michael Lomax, president of the United Negro College Fund; and immigration specialist Douglas Massey of Princeton University. Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune will moderate.
