Position Summary
In order to build an unstoppable movement to close the educational achievement gap, Teach For America is seeking managing directors of teacher leadership development (MD, TLD). Each region is charged with ensuring every student is on a fundamentally different academic and life trajectory as a result of their experience with our corps members and inspiring all levels of stakeholders to become lifelong advocates for educational equity. The MD, TLD is a critical lever in ensuring that regions reach these ambitious program goals. In each region, managing directors of teacher leadership development manage and develop a team of three to six managers of teacher leadership development who each influence the outcomes of approximately 35 teachers. Managing directors of teacher leadership development are therefore responsible for the student achievement of between 8,000 and 34,000 students, depending on the size of the region.
Managing directors serve as senior leaders on their regional teams, ensuring that the region achieves its student achievement, corps member retention, and stewardship goals. Additionally, MDs support their regional leadership teams in reaching development, alumni engagement, and human assets goals. Finally, the MD, TLD supports the development and execution of critical efforts around diversity and inclusiveness for the team. The MD, TLD reports to a member of the executive team in the region, such as the vice president of teacher leadership development or the executive director.

Primary Responsibilities
Lead Transformational Change in our Classrooms
- Hold a compelling vision for program which focuses on maximizing the positive impact the region has on the life paths of our kids
- Inspire program staff to internalize the possibility of achieving ambitious goals related to student outcomes, realize their potential to set students on a dramatically different life trajectory, and claim their role as leaders in the movement
- Work closely with regional leadership to shape and effectively execute the region's strategy to achieve ambitious goals
- Cultivate good judgment in your team about trends and causes in classrooms
- Lead your team to take actions that result in significant changes in classrooms, thereby demonstrating results and putting kids on a life path that gives them the same opportunities as their more affluent peers
Ensure a High Performing Program Team
- Develop a strong culture based on our core values - transformational change, leadership, team, diversity, and respect and humility
- Developing a strong, outcomes focused performance culture within the program team and the corps
- Cultivate, hire, and manage a high-performing team of managers of teacher leadership development to achieve ambitious goals
- Foster the leadership of the program team in order to ensure strong contributions to all regional priorities
Fuel the Movement
- Establish and maintain key school district and community relationships to ensure long-term partnerships and sustainability
- Serve as a member of the teacher leadership development leadership team that makes decisions about the vision and strategy for teacher support and development, and contributes to decision-making on all regional program issues
- Manage the professional development of all program staff in order to support a robust talent pipeline for staff positions in the DC region and throughout Teach For America
Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites
Demonstrated Experience
- Teach For America corps member experience preferred
- 5+ years of work experience required
- Establishing a vision of excellence and building a culture of achievement
- Managing others to effectively track tasks, assess progress, and follow through on the execution of plans
- Analyzing data to draw accurate conclusions and to inform team management approach
- Making informed, timely decisions and using sound judgment to prioritize actions
- Developing and cultivating relationships and networks in order to achieve results
- Exemplifying Teach For America's core values
- Bachelor's degree required
