The National Urban League Policy Institute (NULPI) seeks two Education Research and Policy Interns to support our research and advocacy efforts in education.
NULPI advances the National Urban League's mission of economic empowerment and civil rights through advocacy, research policy analysis and publications that create a favorable climate for National Urban League programs, and positions among policymakers and the public. The Policy Institute provides a foundation from which to advocate on behalf of African Americans and those living in urban communities.
The internship is geared toward students who have a passion for education policy and are capable of doing staff-level work under minimal supervision. The policy focus of the internship will be K-12 education or higher education policy; please indicate your preference in your cover letter.
Through this position, interns will gain meaningful experience in education research and policy through the lens of an historic civil rights organization, as well as strengthen their communication, analytical and organizational skills.
Responsibilities
Internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with projects such as the following:
• Conducting and writing comprehensive literature reviews and policy scans on issues related to NULPI legislative priorities
• Monitoring legislative activities and hearings
• Developing content for social media to promote our education policy briefs and disseminate information about our policy priorities
• Supporting the logistics and execution of meetings and events hosted by NULPI
• Completing other projects as assigned
Requirements and Demonstrated Interests
• Current or recent graduate of a Master's program in education policy, administration, public policy, research, or a related social science field
• Desire to work in a civil rights organization and a strong interest in education policy
• Familiarity with research databases and the ability to analyze research and summarize findings in a succinct manner
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong organizational skills
• Ability to work both independently as well as contribute to a team
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
• Experience with social media is a plus
