BANJOS take over BIRCHMERE on Woody Guthrie's 100th Birthday
CONCERT- Sat. July 14th, Birchmere Music Hall, 7:30pm
3701 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA
OLD TIME BANJO has moved again to the forefront of the acoustic music
scene
with bands and artists that pay tribute to traditional music and
embrace
contemporary aesthetics-groups such as The Carolina Chocolate Drops,
Crooked
Still and musical comedian Steve Martin. It all started with the
collecting
and recording of the great old timers by Mike Seeger along with
performances
of the New Lost City Ramblers and a movement they instigated to bring
this
beautiful music from the Appalachians to the world.
July 14 is also the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie. Can Woody
Gurthrie's
music be played on banjo? Ask Pete Seeger, who traveled with Woody for
many
years and recorded Woody's songs on banjo! The Old Time Banjo Festival
will
not be missing out on Woody's birthday. Expect some fabulous banjo
renditions of Woody's songs.
