About Scholar Academies:

Scholar Academies is a non-profit, school management organization that exists to close the achievement gap and contribute to national efforts to eradicate educational inequity. Operating in Philadelphia and Washington DC--and expanding to Trenton, NJ in the fall of 2012--Scholar Academies manages a network of high-performing schools that provide traditionally underserved, urban students with a meaningful, high-quality education.  It is one of the few charter management organizations committed to taking on "turnaround" opportunities that arise within under-performing or failing District or charter schools, and to starting new schools from scratch. Scholar Academies currently operates three achievement gap-closing schools, including the highest-performing charter middle school in the city of Philadelphia.

About DC Scholars:

DC Scholars is the Washington, DC regional cluster of Scholar Academies and is currently made up of DC Scholars Stanton Elementary School and DC Scholars Public Charter School.  In 2010, Scholar Academies was selected by then-Chancellor Michelle Rhee and DC Public Schools to operate Stanton Elementary, one of the District's lowest performing elementary schools, through a partnership contract with DC Public Schools.  Guided by the unshakable belief that every student can succeed when held to the highest expectations, DC Scholars Stanton Elementary has since implemented a highly focused, progressive educational approach designed specifically to close the achievement gap for low-income students who come to school severely under-prepared.  Located in Ward 8 in southeast Washington DC, Stanton Elementary serves 376 students in grades preschool through five.  Current Chancellor Kaya Henderson recently recognized in testimony to the DC City Council that "the progress I have seen makes me confident that Stanton can serve as a model for improving our schools."  August 2012 will also see the launch of a brand new DC Scholars Public Charter School, which will grow to serve approximately 550 students in grades preschool through eight.  DC Scholars Public Charter School, located in Ward 7 in southeast Washington DC, is committed to preparing all students to attend and succeed academically in high school and college.
