Thurgood Marshall Academy has two openings in its Development department. Thurgood Marshall Academy is public charter high school in Anacostia whose mission is to prepare high school students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society. Thurgood Marshall Academy has been serving District youth since 2001 and is one of the highest-performing charter schools in DC. The school creates an environment that fosters critical thinking, problem solving and public advocacy skills by combining a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum with education about law, democracy and human rights.
TMA is looking to fill the following positions:
Grants Associate
The Grants Associate will join Thurgood Marshall Academy's dynamic development staff and will be responsible for writing grant applications and reports; completing grant reimbursement requests; tracking grant expenditures; cultivating grantor relationships; researching possible funding opportunities; adhering to grant requirements; and assisting in the coordination of the school's annual fundraising gala.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assisting with grants planning for the year
Writing letters of introduction and inquiry to potential new funders
Writing grant applications
Writing grant reports and reimbursement requests
Helping prepare salary allocation reports
Assisting with coordination of projects as related to grants
Assisting with grantor visits
Researching and proposing grants
Attending grant writing workshops and trainings
Attending grant meetings
Processing grant-related income
Maintaining digital and physical filing system
Assisting with maintaining the Donor Perfect Database
Assisting with tracking and reporting on Development Department expenses
Assisting in preparations for Thurgood Marshall Academy's annual spring fundraising gala (e.g.: recruiting and managing volunteers, coordinating event logistics, communicating with sponsors, etc.)
Assisting with and/or manage development-related projects and events that arise during the school year
Assisting with key marketing and communications projects (e.g.: newsletter and e-newsletter)
QUALIFICATIONS:
2-3 years of experience in development and grant writing preferred
Must be a highly organized, detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure
Experience working in a fundraising database application, preferably Donor Perfect
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
Strong written and oral communication skills
Project management experience a plus
Bachelor's degree required
Interest in education and working with youth preferred

Development Associate
The Development Associate's primary responsibilities are in the following areas:
Communications and Marketing
- Write, edit, and produce donor correspondence, including monthly email newsletters and biannual print newsletters;
- Manage printing projects and liaise with appropriate vendors;
- Edit and update website and social media presence of school;
- Write and edit the Annual Report.
Donor Relations and Event-Planning
- Support the school's individual and corporate major gift program;
- Identify, cultivate, and help solicit a portfolio of prospects and donors;
- Manage the school's fundraising and donor acknowledgement events throughout the year, including an annual fundraising gala;
- Assist with special events both independently and in collaboration with key partners, including national charter associations, other schools, nonprofits, corporations, and partner law firms; and
- Attend and manage fundraising related to the Combined Federal Campaign.
Administration
- Manage accurate and clear donor acknowledgments and donation records;
- Process income; and
- Manage departmental budget.
Position reports to the Director of Development & Strategic Partnerships and the Executive Director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree;
- At least 3 years of work experience, preferably in fundraising or event planning;
- Strong organizational and time management skills;
- Excellent oral and verbal communication skills;
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
- Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access; experience with donor management software and/or website content management software a plus;
- Interest in education and working with youth preferred.
