Re: [dcab-l] Videographers?

Barb,

I dabble in video at my job.

- Ask to see their other work. Especially band video, which they may have never done.
- How long do they plan to shoot? 3 songs, a full set, or the whole gig?
- How many cameras do they plan to use? That would affect the price a lot since more cameras implies employees and more gear, and not just the owner's own time.
- Ask what kind of lighting they plan to use. Or will it be the venue stage lights? Without lighting, most video of bands will look like amateur youtube clips. Lighting for video is hard to get right. What you see with your eyes and what gets recorded is very different.
- Do they plan to use an audio feed off the board and snych it? Or are they are also audio pros with very good recording gear?
- How much post-production do they plan to do for you? Adding titles, logos, editing multiple camera shots into one cut, cameos and chit chat, etc. That definitely adds time.
- Video production quotes tend to be all over the map but you do have to try to compare apples to apples. You can find good people who work cheap, tyring to make they chops and build a portfolio.

If you pay $180 and it does not work out, you're out $180 and a do-over. If they prove they can do a good job in advance, and it works out, you saved a lot of $

I'd like to get a video of my band to use for promotional purposes.  My first thought was my niece with a camcorder, but she couldn't get off work.

I talked to three professional guys (and gals).  One said he'd ordinarily charge $1300, but I was able to get him down to $500.  Another said he couldn't do it for less than $1400.  The third said she'd do it for $180.

Would I be cutting my own throat if I went with the low bidder?  Has anyone had this done and has any advice?  Can you recommend someone?

Thanx!
