[YEP-DC] 2 AmeriCorps VISTA positions at For Love of Children (starting Aug 2012, hiring NOW!)

Program Description

For Love of Children (FLOC) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1965. FLOC provides educational services beyond the classroom to help low income students succeed from first grade to college and career. Through example and partnership, For Love of Children teaches and empowers students to transform their own futures.

For Love of Children is currently seeking self-motivated, dynamic and flexible college graduates who are passionate about education to fill 2 AmeriCorps VISTA positions for the 2012-2013 academic year. These positions will located at the FLOC office in Washington, DC, and require a committment from approximately August 20, 2012, to September 2, 2013.

Postsecondary Scholars Coordinator (1 position)

The Scholars Program is an innovative college access and success program that begins with students in 6th grade and works with them until they complete postsecondary degrees. Through workshops and activities, we empower students to develop the academic and life skills they need for college and career success. We provide grade-based and creative theme-based workshops, academic advising, and individual assistance to students and their parents to help them manage critical educational transitions.

The Postsecondary Scholars Coordinator will work closely with the FLOC's full-time staff to expand the capacity of the Scholars Program by increasing the support services provided to our students as they transition into and succeed in pursuing postsecondary education. The Coordinator will develop and implement systems to ensure that our high school and college students are on-track to completion of a diploma or degree, will increase the amount of individual advising that our postsecondary students receive, and will implement in-person and web-based workshops for postsecondary students. The Coordinator will also develop relationships with postsecondary institutions in order to help FLOC better guide our high school seniors in choosing schools, and to ensure that students have a smooth transition into postsecondary that results in long-term success.

Bilingual Recruitment and Outreach Assistant (1 position)

The Recruitment and Outreach team at For Love of Children supports all of FLOC's programs by building community awareness and recruiting volunteer tutors and youth for participation.

Under the supervision of our full-time staff, the Bilingual Recruitment and Outreach Assistant will actively engage in marketing, partnership development, and recruitment efforts to build FLOC's programs. He/she will be active in expanding community awareness of FLOC programming, and will recruit students and volunteers to participate. In this position, you will: implement outreach strategies; support the development of our social media, marketing, and PR efforts; contribute to collateral development, and facilitate presentations at schools and other partnering organizations. Finally, the Bilingual Recruitment and Outreach Assistant will act as the primary liaison to assist Spanish-speaking families through the FLOC intake process. Thus, Spanish language competency is required for this position; fluency is preferred.
