Education Data Analyst
Position Overview
As an integral member of both our Advocacy and School Quality teams, the Education Data Analyst will apply a passion for data, analysis, and compelling storytelling to every aspect of the organization. The Education Data Analyst plays a key role in using FOCUS's expertise in collecting, analyzing, and storing DC education data to support FOCUS's advocacy efforts. The successful candidate will bring strong communication skills, curiosity, and creativity to the analysis of education data. FOCUS is a small office with many opportunities to create your own projects.
About Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS)
FOCUS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit that works with lawmakers, the media and the public to communicate the benefits of the District's public charter school reform. Since our founding in 1996, FOCUS has advocated for equal public funding for charter schools; to free up surplus public school buildings for their use; and to protect their autonomy. FOCUS uses high-quality data analysis to provide key stakeholders with an accurate picture of school performance, enrollment and other relevant information. Through its Performance Management consulting practice FOCUS also works directly with individual charter schools to support effective use of data. (http://focusdc.org)
Responsibilities
- Analyze data and create compelling visualizations to support advocacy team
- Closely track education-related news for ideas that lead to interesting data stories
- Provide analytical support in the drafting of white papers, op-eds, and other pieces
- Organize and display advocacy graphs on the FOCUS website.
- Lead the redesign of FOCUS's online School Quality Dashboard
- Establish and maintain relationships with counterparts in government to ensure timely access to relevant data
- Provide strategic vision for FOCUS database development and maintenance
- Serve as key member of performance management team, working directly with charter school staff on data-related consulting projects (these could include data strategy, project management, dashboard design, trend analysis, data integration, database development, etc.)
- Research and document best practices for use of data in charter school setting
Technical Skills and Experience
- Strong analytical skills—Excel master!
- Documented experience translating data into compelling visualizations and stories
- Knowledge of Tableau or other visualization software
- Experience training adults in basic data applications, such as MS Excel
- Understanding of relational databases (required) and database design or coding (preferred). Should be able to run basic queries against SQL database.
- Bachelor's Degree required
Bonus skills: Experience with data management in a K-12 setting, Student Information Systems, mapping and geospatial data, graphic design, programming, statistical software, especially R.
